crabbing from docks

I am thinking of doing a little crabbing from some local docks around my area. I was wondering if I can use my normal drop em' pots that I use when out on a boat instead of the net ones. for you guys who are in my area, can I drop them from fair harbor or port of allyn? would it be worth my time? thanks for any help
