East side choke cherries question
« on: August 05, 2013, 12:09:22 PM »
So, I got to go out Saturday to my favorite spot. The canyon has lots of choke cherries in it, normally. The bushes I saw only had a few green berries on them. I didn't see the volume of berries I normally do on the bushes. Is this a sign of a bad choke cherry year or have you all noticed a good crop this year so far?

We're the bushes/branches tore up and broken ? I've noticed that the chokecherries behind my house were like that a couple years ago. Seems like the bears avoid them now. Also, all the chokecherries around here still look like green olives with no ripe ones yet. I've seen other bushes that have a ton of non-ripe berries on them........... :dunno:

They didn't seem tore up at all. Just not very many green berries or berries at all. I'm planning to go back in a few weeks, I hope that's enough time to let them ripen up

My guess is that they did not set well due to poor weather. Choke cherries in my area look good and ripe.

I think the bears kill the chokecherry bushes. Mine are all dried up and horrible looking. They've been that way for 3-4 years.

When you come over, I'll show you some berries and we'll get you a bear. How's that ?

I'll find some tomorrow and post them for you.

Still early for the ripe up of choke cherries..huckle and salmon berries are the ones to look for now, give it a couple three weeks for the chokes, followed 2-3 weeks latter for the elders to be sweet and ripe. Or just find an old orchard!

JKEEN came over 3 years ago and I got him into 3 bears at ONE time, all together. Also 1 Bobcat, he missed.

Ribka came up last year and we saw 1 bear right on the road 25 feet from us, he said it was too small. It was good enough for me, but I couldn't get my 338 Federal away from his ear........ :chuckle:

September is good to come over.

Thanks for the replies. I'm gonna give it a few more weeks and then head out again.  I did notice some service berries ripe and ready.
