CVA Elkhorn Pro opinions?

So I have a hunting buddy that is in the market for a muzzleloader. He doesn't have much to spend. I was looking at a CVA Elkhorn Pro at a sporting goods store today and it seemed like a decent gun for the $$$. It comes with all three ignition systems, an exposed breech and is Wa legal. Does anyone have this gun or any experience with it? What are the pros/cons? What bullet/load combos does it perform well with? Would it be a good buy for a newbie to start muzzleloading with. I suggested he get a Knight or a Traditions but he doesn't quite have the cash for a high end gun right now. I would loan him one of mine but he's a lefty and both my Knight and Vortek are thumbhole stocks for a righty. Any info would be appreciated!

I use 250 grain SST's over 3 Triple 7 pellets(150 grains). Mine loves it.

I have been running one for 3 or 4 seasons now. Love the gun. My buddy and a cousin also bought one and both are happy with the result of there purchase.

You just said traditions and high end gun in the same sentance, hahaha. On a side note the cva is a great gun for the money.

I love mine, great gun! I use Power Belt Platinum 270gr with 150g of black powder. Mine is not set up for Washington however I have a scope and im using 209's, but the thing is accurate!

Thanks all!  I passed the word on to my buddy and he went by the store and checked out the gun. He's gonna pick one up after he clears out some bills. I am curious to shoot with him after all the good responses. I would like to see how the gun performs. Thanks again!

the one thing if you use pellets switch out the stock nipple.  With the stock nipple you might get some missfires using pellets.  I put an CVA perfect nipple and it has worked flawless with pellets or powder.

       Buddies  all stand by the one s that they have an  shoot ,  killed many a deer and a few good elk as well  with them .  cant be to bad   long as the price is right for your friend

With all these good reviews and a price tag of just $240 it seems like it could be the deal of the decade as far as muzzleloaders go. I kind of wish I had seen this gun around before I bought my Knight and Vortek.
Hey Russ, I am gonna start my buddy off shooting powder. I personally have never been a pellet guy but if he wants to try pellets I'll give him the heads up. Thanks!

They really are a great deal. I have owned a lot of smoke poles and I love the fit and feel of the elkhorn. I also love the bolt action since most of my old guns were slide actions. Never liked having a cap just trying to hang on or having to drop the slide on a cap then cock before a shot.
