Looks like I'm getting a blue tick pup
« on: August 08, 2013, 07:55:34 AM »
My yellow lab passed away a couple weeks back.. He was my first dog and an amazing bird dog. I have a black lab and he's an alright bird dog so I want to try something different, found some 9 week old blue ticks I like. Going to try picking one up Saturday. I'd love to get into coon hunting. How do you guys like blue ticks? I've only ever owned labs. How hard is it to have them an inside dog? Not inside full time but nights? Also how hard are they usually to train?

I've had several blueticks, they can be trained just like a lab, they won't behave exactly like a lab, but train them to handle like you would your labs and you'll have a well behaved dog.  They do just fine in the house.  The problem guys have is they think hounds are knuckleheads and can't be trained, so they don't put in the time and effort and they end up with a hard to handle knucklehead.  Remember they are pups, keep it fun and work on all you handling basics, sit, stay, come, heel.  Add a couple extras like kennel and load, makes life a lot easier when you load them in the dog box.  Don't try to have a superstar too soon, lots of hound guys ruin pups by trying to do way too much with them at a very young age.  Keep it fun, be firm but fair and you'll most likely have a good dog.

:yeah:Hounds are very smart. They can be runners though. So giving them free run at a young age can backfire on ya. Great family dogs. Just as sweet as labs in my opinion.
What would life be without the thrill of the hunt?

Good looking dogs.  Ask Bluebulls about his Hound "Boone".  He has some experience with hounds.

one of my best cat dogs was a blue tick, she was as gentle as they come to, damn i miss having hounds, the bawl alone is worth the gettn one. if you spend alot of time with your pup you will have a good dog, the more time and training you put into it the better your pup will be... good luck  congrats by the way

My first hound was a bluetick. She was a great coon dog, and was a trained house dog too. She could come into the house and behave and was potty trained. But she was a hunter and if you let her go unattended outside the hunt was on.
