Anyone calling bears?

Just checking to see if anyone is calling bears or just sitting on clear cuts and berry patches. If so how's your luck and what are you using?

Ha! I don't have a FoxPro, which is what I would like to use to call bear in.  But I do have a wounded bunny mouth call.  Anytime I read about calling bears it sounds like it takes about an hour and 15 minutes. Saw several people all say that same time for their bears last year.

Ive been doing a little calling, some lost fawn/ fawn distress and some rodent distress.....no bears yet but twice now Ive called in LARGE predatory birds so must be doing something right? By the way, having an eagle circling over you after doing a fawn call is kinda creepy.

I've been trying to use my RR bear call  Not sure what I'm doing but I make a lot of noise  I don't seem to be scaring the deer away though, not sure if that is good or bad?

I've only called in one in a lot of attempts ever. And that was last year. A small bear that we got to 40 yards. We let him walk. I've been addicted ever since, even though I have no clue what I'm doing. What a great time;)

been cold calling, wounded rabbit, fawn distress. from ground and tree stand. no luck as expected cold calling. unless there is fresh fresh sign cold calling is more of a time passer i think. seen it many times by wayne carlton as well as peoples vids it does work if you see one. they run hard and its powerfull. dreaming of seeing a bear and calling him in. rush? i think so..........

I'm heading back to the coast monday or tuesday. Will be doing some setup up's on video so people can see how i call. I will be mixing Deer distress with my Raspy distress. I use a closed reed alot.With my Foxpro i will be using snow shoe hare alot this time. Good luck every one. Rick

Me and addicted2hunting sat in a clearcut last night near some sign from 6:00-8:00. Nothing came in until addicted2hunting started blowing a wounded cottontail call. After about 20 minutes of calling sessions we had a bear circling the area growling. the growls were short, almost like protest growls like we woke him up from a nap. haha. He was on the move and just out of sight. Pretty sure he was circling down wind. We never saw him before shooting light was gone. pretty cool experience though.

I use my FoxPro for bear and cat calling for obvious reasons. With the e caller should I let it play non stop or break it up? How long for a bear stand?

I use all sorts of different calls...I have a new javellin call I am gonna try....

As far as duration of calling...I've called bears in under 5 min or up to an hour out. I usually dont call longer than an hour, but I will sit and wait to see if anything comes in once I go quiet.

not yet but will be as soon as I can get out with a partner, we called a cat last year was awesome but for some reason people dont approve of me going out and calling predators all by my lonesome where there are known kitty cats....

I use an old ecaller and my closed reed predator calls from Bearmanric and Phelps

I leave the Foxpro Running. Constant. Bears lose interest easy. Javalina distress has called bears in in Oregon. Was by Baker with Johnny stewart cassette player. And like i said snowshoe is a good one. Nothing beats a Raspy closed reed. Guy's and Gal's look under you tube for bear calling good stuff. Sound hurt put emotion in it. Rick

First bear I ever killed I called in in less then 5 minutes. I was also cold calling.

I tried the foxpro for the first time. No bears, but two coyotes came in. The hills came alive when I turned on the foxpro, a lot of coyotes were howling/barking.

I have a friend in Oregon that claims, "I call bear 100% of the time when hunting them!"

Shortly after he explains, "They only listen to me about half the time and only come to say hello about 10% of the time."    "But, I keep calling to them anyway!"

The guy kills a lot of bear.  BIG bear too!  At first I thought he was just a crazy old drunken carpenter.  However, over the years I began to understand what he was saying.  When you start calling keep at it with little or no hesitation and delay until you are ready to leave that spot.  Don't give up if you don't see immediate success since there will probably only be bear listening to your calling about 50% of the time.  And even if they are listening you still need to find one that has the motivation to come take a look.  When one does...it's pretty darn exciting

I wasnt aware you could use electronic calls for bears in washington. I guess they are considered a predator. I guess I need to try it then, just got a fox pro not long ago..Thanks for the info guys

Can't wait to see and listen to the videos. I've been calling every day i go out and have called in 1 bear this season that never showed itself. I feel like I'm not setting up right or dialing the right number.
And I need to buy some better calls maybe.

Bears are like coyotes. Most of the time they go for the down wind side. I call into thick stuff were there feeding or in timber. A closed reed tuned Jackrabbit works best for me. Mainly put emotion into the call. With your hands muffling the exaust. It will sound at times like a bear cub. I also do a long Wa wa wa for deer distress. Rick

I just feel like my calls themselves are not proper sounding. I'm calling into thick cover and timber with lots of fresh good sign. Sometimes I feel like I'm blowing on the call to hard or to often not taking a breath between blowing the call sometimes.

3 seasons ago I used a cow elk call with the tube taken off. Without pinching down on the mouth piece it made a very nice distress sounding call. And the north bend area bears loved that call. Sadly I lost it when I had a bear scare the hell out of me coming in to close I threw it as I reached for my rifle

I have an old Lohman cd caller for coyotes, but it has a fawn in distress call on it.  Tried it out cold calling for bear for the first time today for an hour and got nothing.  Sure was odd having the thunder rolling over head and listening to that thing blaring, waiting for a predator to come flying in any minute.

Depends on what call you are using.  You are trying to tell a story with every call sequence you do.  Sometimes it's a lost calf searching for it's mother and finding trouble.  Other times it's a rabbit trying to survive the ravages of a small predator.  Oftentimes, as in coyote calling, this can be the Reader's Digest condensed version of the story.  For bobcats the story reads in full publication and lasts a bit longer.  When bear hunting think all four volumes of "War and Peace". The two part epilogue...probably not necessary    Basically you want to gradually build up to complete anguish and desperation then finish with exhaustion and death.  It's not a pleasant story you are telling so be sure to get emotional through the call.
 
There are generally just two characters in a calling story.  The victim and the small predator.  So I never like to change calls.  If you start with a rodent and finish with a calf in distress the story makes no sense.  So if I start with a rabbit I want to finish with that same rabbit.  Start with the calf I finish with that same calf.  However, if I am working the sequence with a calf or fawn call I want to start out simply lost in the woods then progress to a confrontation, a long exhausting fight and then the slow agonizing death.  If rabbit or rodent I start from the confrontation and then progress on the same story line from there.

Knowing the sounds and noises is only the beginning to becoming a successful caller.  All that does is give you the character voices.  The way you bringing those characters to life is the difference between an average caller and a great successful caller.

What do you guys think about making squacks and squeals on a cow elk call?  You can make rabbit sounding noises on those.
