A friend of mine bought a Remington 700 SPS standard in the 30.06 last week (wedding gift card from me). It was advertised to be free floating and it wasn't. We went to shoot it and it was all over the place. Another friend of ours said he had the exact same rifle and it had the same problem, not free floating. So he had it free floated and shot it again and it's shooting 1/2 groups at 100 yards. So I guess that's something to think about if you go the Remington route. Not a huge deal, but there isn't going to be any "out of the box" accuracy, not with that model anyway.
RemmyHammer will be along shortly to correct you and your friend regarding your experience.
R700's are God's gift to rifle shooters.

Hahaha! Remmyhammer..fits better then Biggerhammer! Yep, he will always be around to correct, keeps this site amusing for most here! :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle:

I just enjoy you following me around like a frustrated little school girl. 😉

Lol, who follows  ;)who? Sillyhammer.. :chuckle: we all know better..Tikka, Remington? Barnes, M&P? Vortex? They all work, they all kill game. use what you will, others will use what they have faith in! Hope you find some time to actually go out and kill something this year!

Let's cool it guys. I'm tired of being a friggin baby sitter, for crying out loud, how old are you guys?

There are a few members following each other around to take jabs at each other. This is a final warning, the next guy who takes a poke at another member in this little group will take 3 days off, if you've been banned before then it will be longer than before.

I'm not joking and informing the mods to take action on the first of you to poke at the other.

Interesting? I was wondering about the 'free floating' when I was handling it at the store, it sure didn't look it as the stock seemed awfully snug? Mine had a "lump" on the inside of the stock right where the front sling post screws in...couldn't get a dollar bill past it. I don't use a sling so I attacked it with the Dremel and there's no contact now! Need to go shoot it again to see if it helped?

I personally love my Remington ADL in .270 with a cheap Bushnell 3-9 that I bought 11 years ago for $325 that was supposed to "get me by" until I could afford something nicer. That rifle is one heck of a boat paddle, heavy as heck too. Out of the box I shot 1" groups with factory ammo at 100 yards. I rarely clean it, it's been smashed in the rocks once when the sling broke (scope never budged when I check the accuracy later), it's been sat on several times (by me) laying on the tail gate of pickups, I've yet to ever have to re adjust the scope when I get ready for bear/deer season and I've sucessfully shot 6 deer and 1 bear with it... the list goes on it's been very good to me as bad as I've treated it. I also have to give props to the Bushnell scope. Oh yeah, I still have yet to replace it like I keep threatening to do every year, but I can't argue with success... I named her Ol' Bertha

Nice  I definitely don't hate Remington by any means, I have just hunted with one for 12 years and am thinking of a change of pace. Just pondering different Remington or completely different Tikka?? That's about all it boils down to. Just really like the input from folks on this site, I haven't been disappointed once!

BTW, saw a nice blackie yesterday, i was over for a night.
To hunt and butcher an animal is to recognize that meat is not some abstract form of protein that springs into existence tightly wrapped in cellophane and styrofoam.

I have a new Remington 700 SPS .243 and a new Tikka T3 lite and here is my impression:

I got a thread somewhere in the guns section trying to figure out why the Remington wouldn't shoot and how to cure the "free float" barrel.  There are two contact pads a guy could buzz off with a dremmel, but the stock is so flimbsy......it needs the barrel for support  :o
This gun needs a new stock and trued action and new barrel as I'm not impressed with the factory cut.

I also happen to have a new Tikka T3 lite in 30-06.   It shoots well and the stock is much better than the remmy plastic stock.  I will not mess with the tikka as it was ment to be a box stock gun.  Slap a scope on it and go shoot.
I don't care if it gets marred up or some rust spots, it's a truck gun that happens to shoot pretty well - it's a work horse not a safe queen.
It's my first tikka, probably my last tikka.   the rest will be customs.
