Do yourself a favor and and least take a look at the "new" (beginning in 2008) South Carolina made Winchester Model 70's. Many Winchester fans think they might possibly be the best Model 70's yet, or if not, at least as good as the pre-64's. Thery are an exact reproduction with state of the art machines.I perfer nice wood and blue, but you can certainly find whatever combo synthetic, stainless, whatever in those new Winchesters. Check Winchester's site. By all accounts they shoot really well out of the box.
Sounds like you have the green light and only buy a rifle every 12 years or so, step up and buy yourself your dream package whatever that is. I like the stock on the Sako A7 a bit better then the T3, I like the stock on the Sako Finnlight 10 times better than the T3 or A7 but it really doesn't matter what I like. Go to a few of the stores and look at as many as you can and buy what YOU like, and by the way Happy Birthday next month, it would be fun to hear about what you get. The good news is most major manufactures are making rifles that shoot better than what most people can shoot them, great values everywhere in my opinion.
Bassquatch, as you can see, MOST on here agree they are both great brands, obviously they are. But almost 2-1, folks here who actually shoot and own either model, and those are the opinions to listen too, believe the Tikka to be the better bargain of the two! But as most would also agree, they are both great choices. Best to grab one of both and have both bases covered! If you can convince the Mrs of that! Lol!
I have also had both and give the Remington my vote. SPS stainless would be my choice in that price range. My next choice would be the Savage over the tikka.I would send that Leupold VXII in for the meagar shipping cost and have them go through it, it's free!
All the things that matter, weight, accuracy, action, trigger, detachable mag, point to Tikka.Remington if you want a heavier gun that requires another $300 in upgrades just to shoot as well as the Tikka.Or you could get a bargain-priced Sako(T3).Or you could spend $2k to get a Remington down to 6.3lbs for that high mountain hunt, or just buy the Tikka.Or you could buy the Remington because 'That's what the military snipers use!'...Yup, just like the one at Dick's My money goes to Tikka. No regrets.
