1 yo lab to thin, help
« on: August 14, 2013, 09:45:50 PM »
My lab is not putting on weight. I can see his vertebrae and hip bones. I feed him at the top of the recommended serving chart on the back of the bag. He is fed Nutra nuggets. He is active and happy. He will fetch until exhaustion. What gives? Thanks

Start adding a cup of cottage cheese or a cup of plain yogurt once a day to his food. That's what my vet told us accept we had to pay 40$ to hear it.
hey anybody got a towel, i just hit a waterbuffalo

I would start feeding him half a can of wet dog food with his dry food. We feed our dog dynamite dog food from Costco and she has packed on the pounds from it. (Not huge but no more ribs)

my dog got parvo when she was a pup the vet said to mix her food with yogurt or cottage cheese to help put weight back on, and there is a enzyme that parvo destroys in there stomach. we have been giving cottage cheese and yogurt to all three of our dogs now for 2 years i doubt it's bad for them. I am sure we would have known by now. And like norsepeak said check for worms.

I will deworm and raise his feed fir a bit. Thanks.

I would deworm.

Then look at his dogfood. What kind is it? Nutra Nuggets had Kcals per listed on the back. Compare that to other dog foods.

If you are feeding the Lamb and Rice and feeding 5 cups a day or more, time to change the dog food.

The kcals on the nutra nuggets L & r is 340 kcals. That is not enough for most growing dogs. So......

What I have done, is feed my young boys, 2 cups of L & R and 2 cups of Puppy. Nutra Nuggets Puppy has 440 Kcals per cup. So with 4 cups of dogfood, I have essentially added 3/4 cup more of food without actually ADDING any more kibble.

Too much food, and some will not get digested and will just run through him.

Take a stool sample to your vet and if the dog has worms you'll worm for the right one's. Ya might get the dog a check up at the same time.
There's a reason I like dog's more than people

Post up the actual nutritional info(fat, protein, etc %'s) and how much you're feeding and you'll get some more input I bet.

I had a dog that could keep from getting worms she was always skinny and ate so much you could see her belly distended usually but she looked like skin and bones.  Eventually had to put her down it started to affect other aspects of her health.  Hope you can figure it out good luck.
Now then, get your equipment—your quiver and bow—and go out to the open country to hunt some wild game for me.  Gen. 27:3
