How would you transport a downed elk in a mid sized sedan...

Hey guys
SO one of my hunting partners had to back out of our trip this year and unfortunately he was the one with the truck. Luckily we can still get to where we are going in my city car but it raises some logistical issues if we are successful.

Have any of you guys ever driven an elk in a sedan? Got any good tips on how to keep it cool (cant bring the freezer now that we dont have the truck)? I've heard of using an old sleeping bag filled with dry ice, any idea if that would work?

As a side not, I have access to a freezer that is 4 hrs away by car. Just looking for a way to keep the meat cool until then.

Oh, and the transportation has to be reasonably clean and tidy - its my wifes car

I think you're going to have to bone the meat out and put it in coolers. Probably 3 good sized coolers maybe?

  We have transported several elk in a Suzuki Jeep, just bone it out and put in coolers.  I agree with Jacklope.

Any idea how many coolers are required? How big was your elk and how many coolers did it fill up?

A couple 120's will fit an average sized critter, boned that is.

I'd leave the hind quarters on the bone, and bone out everything else.

Can you get one big cooler in the trunk and one on the backseat?

I transported an elk in the trunk of my 82 Ford Escort one year. (Only had to transport it to camp, maynbe five miles...then into a truck. )  Quarters in game bags, all sticking hoof side up out the back, tailgate up but bungeed down... I stuffed the spare tire and all the other crap into the back seat for the time being...
