Anyone need help hunting?
« on: August 18, 2013, 09:39:10 AM »
Hi all!
I'm a new resident of Washington State (Issaquah area) originally from Texas. I got my shiny new driver's license the other day and took it straight to get my shiny new hunting and fishing licenses where I was promptly denied. I apparently have to have my license for 90 days to qualify for residency. So, the trout will have to wait and it looks like I'll only be scouting until October.

With that said, I'm looking to meet and learn with you experts here about the ways of mountain hunting. I'm most interested in public land bear and deer at first, but whatever gets me out into the wilderness I'm happy with. If anyone would like to meet up and have someone to help scout (or hopefully backpack out some meat!) I'd be interested to hear.

As for equipment, I use things that go pow, with my favorite being a .50 inline muzzleloader. I don't mind tagging along with the bow hunter types though. :)

Cheers!
David

Welcome to Washington and Hunt-Washington. You shouldn't have to go far to see bears and blacktail deer. If you want to drive and explore you will find more remote areas with less granola's (maybe?) Our game regulations are kind of goofy so read them carefully to make sure your equipment is washington legal, muzzle loader especially. Deer restrictions can vary from one unit to the next so make sure you know your boundaries and what the restrictions are. I'm no expert, but I hope this helps. Good luck.

Thanks! I agree, the regulations are a job itself to read and understand along with the staggering amount of land types to match, especially compared to Texas. I'm not complaining - I like choices. :) I'm also aware that my muzzleloader is not legally defined as such here so it will be limited to rifle season only. One day I may convince the wife that a new rifle purchase is necessary to expand my hunting options!

I'm sure there are bear around here. My neighbors warned me of the neighborhood bear that loves trash cans. Fortunately for him he's off limits. :D

I saw a bear a few years ago a block from snoqualmie falls at a dead run for the falls. I was driving by and wanted to make a quick u turn to see the show of the suicidal bear jump.  :chuckle: never did hear how that turned out. You can use your muzzle loader just not 209 primers or scopes during muzzle loader season. its a good season and worth converting your gun to comply IMO. There are less muzzle loaders than rifle. If you want more area to your self think about giving this season a go.

Most of my hunting partners either got drawn for other tags or don't have vacation time. I just found out that my one partner who was all lined up to go scouting and had two weeks to spend on the actual hunt is having some health issues and needs to lay low while the docs start running some tests.

So... I'm looking for a partner or two who are interested in going on the hunt of a lifetime. Its' really sad to think that I have this great tag and nobody to share it with. That's just not how it's supposed to be.

I'd like to hunt with somebody who can be patient enough to pass on the bullwinkles and wait for a trophy, but also be able to help with calling and of course capeing, boning and packing. I had planned to scout on September 5-8 and hunt the first two weeks of October. If this sounds like you, I would love to talk. PM me if you're interested.

Just curious as to what makes your muzzleloader illegal?.....I'm not muzzleloader type hunter so makes me wonder.

Ductsquatch, there are specific rules listed in the regs pertaining to what
Types of muzzleloading equipment  is legal to hunt with in WA. For example
209 primers are not legal to hunt with, scopes, etc.

Yes - sorry, I missed this post! Here's a rundown of the regulations: http://apps.leg.wa.gov/WAC/default.aspx?cite=232-12-051

My rifle is a CVA Optima: 209 primer ignition, protected nipple and a scope; everything disallowed for Washington muzzleloading hunting! It's still a fun rifle and I'll probably end up using it in modern season at any rate.

I am sure my Dad would know more about a gun like this. He has a couple of muzzle loaders. Protected nipples sound interesting, but doubt I would know what to do with them. ;)

Hey,

Are you having any luck finding someone who needs a little guidance?  I know I need some!  I have all my tags and have been up the I-90 corridor looking for bears this week.  Curious if you have seen any scouting or if you wanted to get out for some one of these days after work?  I work in redmond and am off work around 3pm everyday.

Cheers,
Kris
