Which is better? Any opinions?
« on: October 23, 2008, 04:56:17 PM »
I am looking for a predator/deer rifle for me to use in the short term (predators) and for my wife/son to use long term (deer). I am looking at a .243 as it is legal for both.

I was looking for thoughts and opinions on two different brands/models. I am looking for accuracy out to 200 yards, fairly lightweight and rugged.

Remmington 770
Savage 111XP3 combo

I would have to say Savage easily a better choice than a budget Remington.   Savages have been considered on the budget end as far as rifles go for awhile yet with good reliabiliy and some of the best out of the box accuracy out there.  I have a few.

Savages are known for there low price, but good quality and out of the box accuracy.  I love my Remington but if your talking the 770 instead of a 700 ADL or BDL I'd stay away from the Remington

Savage. I'd stay way clear of the 770. All it is, is an upraded 710 which had several probs and was recalled a couple of times and now discontinued. My good friend has one that seems ok but the action is unbelieveably stiff.

I'd definately buy the Savage.

I love the Savage rifles, I have my largest Montana buck thanks to someones brand new Savage breaking while taking a shot :chuckle: Honestly though, they really are supposed to build a nice gun, I think I would go with the 700 myself though, and it doesn't have anything to do with my buck either. :twocents:

I've never shot either, but have handled them both. The 770 feels cheap and stiff. The Savage feels very smooth.

about 5 years ago I went through this same thing, after much deliberation I bought a nef .243 and never looked back. man what a great decision that little rifle has accounted for many a deer in the last five years. JB

I have owned (past tense) 2 Savage rifles.  Both were junk.  Maybe I just got bad rifles, but neither would shoot a better group than 2.5 inches.  I would consider something else, like the 700 even in an ADL.  :twocents:

I think the way the economy is right now, I would shop for a second hand gun. Top quality low price, I bet there are loads of rem 700 243 out there.

I picked up a savage earlier in the year. Other than the cushion on the back of the stock feeling like a marshmallow I think it seemed like a good rifle. Never shot one before. Mostly a remington fellow myself. But I like the 700 model.
