When I worked in Wyoming I would say, hands down, the most common ranch truck rifle was a bolt action .243, followed by .270 and .30-06.  .308 is another good option, you can shoot cheap military surplus fmj at varmints.  My personal vote would be a Remington 700 .243 with a fixed 6 power scope.

There was an original model Ruger M77 in .243 for sale on here not long ago.  I have the same rifle and shoot it more than anything else.
I have a tang safety M77 in .243. No question....sweet shooter. It may even be available still.

You blew it! Should have got a 375 H&H! if you want, I'll take that 280 and look for a home for it and you can get the 375!

I have to admit, I laughed at it...

Congrats on the .280 RT, it's not too much different from your 06, but there is something about the caliber that draws me in as well.

Classic .257 with some pretty little handloads.....I can see it now.....suble pop....lope just falls over.

Finally someone brought up the .257 Bob.  Perfect in my opinion for fitting the need.  A classic cartrige to boot.  I woundn't even think twice.  Of course I have several so I may be biased. :chuckle:
