We were hesitant on the Android version due to cost, time, etc.  Just found a way to make it happen much faster this week.  We are expecting about 4 weeks of development time now.  That is our goal!

Grizzlyadams,

We have a 100% money back guarantee just give us a call for a refund.  None of us here at the office or any other customer seems to be having these problems with zooming in.  We appreciate the feedback but always hope that customers will contact us with any problems before giving up on a product and giving bad feedback.  Usually the solution is very simple.

Cheers,
Matt

Why would you say this? You know the zoom is a problem. There are other reviews online documenting the same thing. There is no detail in the maps being used as an example. I think you should take a look at some real GPS apps out there like "Gaia" now those are some topo maps with detail no matter how close you zoom in.  Sorry man... Not trying to bash your product, but at least be honest with people. I have the app and I do like some aspects of it. Even though I requested a refund and you said yes, I'm going to hold on to it because it is promising and I've heard you're a good guy. However as far as detailed mapping goes, you guys have a long ways to go, but I know you'll get there. I will be using it this season as a backup to my better GPS app and to use for GMU and property boundaries. As far as the zoom goes, I'll just have to make sure I'm well inside the borders.

The kill is the satisfying, indeed essential, conclusion to a successful hunt. But, I take no pleasure in the act itself. One does not hunt in order to kill, but kills in order to have hunted. Then why do I hunt? I hunt for the same reason my well-fed cat hunts...because I must, because it is in the blood, because I am the decendent of a thousand generations of hunters. I hunt because I am a hunter.

grizzlyadams,

Thanks for providing us some feedback.  I spent some time digging up some answers to your questions.  Hopefully this helps out you and the other readers to making a decision that works for them.

First our main focus in land ownership maps specifically public and private property boundaries and land owner names, we do this very well.  Other features like topo, basemaps, trails, etc. we have to rely on other sources for these.  Sometimes there may be a better provider for one of these but as far as land ownership maps that is our bread and butter.

Our app uses basemap data from multiple external data providers.  These include government agencies as well as private parties.  Depending on the source of the data, there may or may not be map data available for all possible zoom levels, particularly as the get zoomed further into the map/app.  Also, not all basemaps are available for offline use due to licensing restrictions. As for our topo maps, here is a brief explanation of each, and screenshots of a sample of the data.

Here are some details on each topo map and when the topo lines turn off, you can continue to zoom in to see hunting units, property lines, and land owner names.

USGS Topo: Topo map with elevation contours in feet, hydrological features. Cachable for offline use.  Can zoom in to about 1,500 feet.

Topo + Trails (NeoTreks): Topo map with elevation contours in feet and good trails coverage.  Can zoom in to about 500 feet.

World Topo (ESRI): Topo map with contours in meters.  Can zoom in to about 600 feet.

We are looking for an additional topo basemap which is licensed for offline use, and can be zoomed closer to the ground, and considering our options at this time.

Now I do have to take exception to the comment that you will not be able to see your position relative to property lines and GMUs.  In the examples below you can see clearly that I can zoom in to 43 feet which is the limit on my iPhone and I can still see the GMU boundaries, property lines, and land owner names, the basemaps no longer show up but our map still does.  This makes it very easy to tell which hunting unit you are standing in or property you are on.

We will be looking into ways to extend the zoom capability of Basemaps based on the the feedback we have gotten even if we have to make the Basemaps ourselves!

I love the app but found when I do not have a data signal, I couldn't zoom in below about 4000ft. In the examples above it looks like you have a WiFi connection. How about with no connection?

This is a terrific thread.  Hunting GPS maps - great job explaining your topo map constraints.  Most topos are not intended to be zoomed into very closely.  There is a finite amount of detail that can shown with topo.  I dont understand why anyone wants to zoom in really close to a topo map.  :dunno:
So much more information can found in aerial imagery.  I have found that using both topo at low scale to better understand the landscape and aerial to understand features on the ground works the best.

Hunting GPS maps- keep focusing on the land ownership overlays.  Also do you know if the "feel free to hunt" lands are kept in shapefiles form?  If so can you include them as layer if you havent already?

That was my question: How does it work without a signal?

Given that, I sure wish the company would step up and include land owner names EVERYWHERE they have data, as promised. In densely populated areas like King County they appear to pick and choose which properties to provide land owner names for.

Pianoman, it works great for me, both topo and aerial.  You just have to cache the areas you are planning to hunt before you go.

The only improvement I mentioned is that I would like to get a bit closer than 4000ft, using either topo or aerial when no I had no data connection.  I see there was a recent update (received an email today asking to re-cache data) so maybe it will be better when I am in field mode.

Ha, good luck getting your money back! I tried contacting them for two weeks. I was having issues with getting the app to work and there is no phone number for you to call to get help. You have to email your issue and it took a week and a half for me to get a reply. The reply did not even address the issue I was having. The app randomly started working all of a sudden and it does work great except for not having a map key that can tell you what the different colors mean for public land.

Tagging this to stay informed. Waiting for the android app. Thanks for exposing yourself to the abuse that comes with product support. If I have any issues, I'll try to PM you 1st.

I haven't had any issues on my iPhone or iPad, but I agree - no color key for the public lands is really annoying.

I have had no issues at all with this app. Although I primarily bought it for land ownership. If you tap on all the areas of land that are different colors it tells you what kind of land(state or private) and who owns it. As for the zoom: if you cache your area that you are hunting and put it in field mode I can zoom in on aerial mode super close. Close enough to mark camp and glassing spots and water in the Idaho backcountry. I really like the different icons available to mark stuff.

I have my concerns with the app from time to time but you guys are losing me on the no color thing.

The colored green area is public land.

Hmmm, maybe it's location dependent.  Here's two shots on my map that don't show anything but color, and I have the land ownership layer on.

If you know the area you can figure out what kind of public land it is, and on the west side of the state there aren't many different types.
