Our Tuna Charter just Cancelled On Us
« on: August 22, 2013, 08:20:26 PM »
We scheduled a tuna charter out of Newport Oregon called Yaquina Bay Charters a few months ago. They just called us today and said they were cancelling both trips this weekend because the weather was suppose to be to bad. I checked the weather and the wind is suppose to be pretty mild both days down there. Something seems fishy to me but its a big bummer for sure. I just bought a new pressure cooker and was ready to fill the boat. Anyone else have experience with these guys or have something similar happen?

" In today's instant gratification society, more and more pressure revolves around success and the measurement of one's prowess as a hunter by inches on a score chart or field photos produced on social media. Don't fall into the trap. Hunting is-and always will be- about the hunt, the adventure, the views, and time spent with close friends and family. " Ryan Hatfield

How's the weather report for 30+ miles out to sea? Maybe they know something locals news stations don't typically report for ocean weather conditions.  :dunno:

Doesn't look too bad.

I would check with a couple other guides in the area and ask them about the weather. If they're going, then it's definitely just a skipper trying to play some city folks for a fool when they don't wanna go out.

NOAA's showing 2&4@8 combined that could come out pretty square, still doable but maybe not too comfortable. Not familiar with the charter, was this a six pac boat or a larger party vessel? You still can't second guess a captain though, if he dosen't want to run I'm sure he has his reasons.

Its a 32' boat that takes out 10 max at a time. The boat was suppose to have been fully booked so I'm not sure why he would bag out unless he got offered more by a large group at the last minute. Not professional if thats the case but who knows, maybe he has a good reason. I don't want to be out on the water with a skipper that doesn't want to be! I've always wanted to do it so I'll have to book again next year with another charter.

Some skippers are smart enough to cancel a trip when the outlook isnt good. Why take a chance sinking a boat over some fish!  Or have 10 people puking all over the boat wishing they were dead, and not catching any fish because of bad conditions. Then demanding their money back because they shouldnt have gone out in the first place.

He could be saving you all your fuel.lodging,food,liscence,etc. fees because he knows it wouldnt be worth it. And actually wants to treat his customers fairly! Wouldnt that be a great concept.

I know its a bummer. I would be upset too. But he really could be looking out for your best interest. Ive been on the ocean in bad conditions and its no fun. Especially if your sea sick and puking for 10 or 12 hours.

I think its a combination of it might be a little rough and they haven't been getting into them until the 45-60 mile range. He called again today and explained it better so we are going to try them again next year. Hopefully it works out.
