new duck call?
« on: August 24, 2013, 09:48:37 PM »
:yeah:so I'm wanting to get a new duck call soon. I am thinking either a Saunders call, Mac island or a echo call. What are your thoughts?

I would take an rnt or echo before I took a commander, differnt classes of calls really though.

Can you put your hands on any of what your looking at and actually blow it? I prefer to actually hear and use a call before I spend to much money.

How much you want to spend? Open water or timber call? Wood or acrylic? I have the echo timber wood barrel with a poly insert, sounds great for 50 bucks, also have an echo meat hanger that I love too, little but louder than the timber and it is acrylic. Both of mine are double reeds.

Definately try them out.  A call that someone else can work well doesn't mean a good fit for yourself.  If your just starting out a good learner call or one for the lanyard is a Primos Wench call.  Echos have always been solid calls as well.  Puck from single, double or tripple reed calls.  Shorter smaller barrel are easier to use longer bigger barrel take more volume but can produce great sounds if you know how to roll or cut the air with proper back pressure.

Try them out and see which works best for your style.  I have boxes of calls.  Always trying new ones for fun.

Thanks for the reply guys. The cost doesn't mater to me. I've been duck hunting for the last I'd say ten yes but only moderately. I was in the Marine corps for four yrs sonim just getting into bird hunting again. I've got the original wench and a cheap sink. I wouldn't consider myself a rookie caller but at the same time I'm by no means a great caller at all. I thjnknj can rule out a echo call I really like the Saunders coupe or a Mac island call.

I feel the same way smossy!, there are some calls that can be tough without allot of practice.
I have harvested allot of ducks with duck commander calls.

Haydels DR85,  $15 - $20 still probably,  OR timber cutter which is the DR85 in a different shape external barrel, maybe a little easier to grip with gloves on your hands and is a few $$ more.
I call in just as many ducks with these as friends do with high $$ calls.

Get a good call and ya don't pay for all the Duck Commander hype.

A friend competes for Saunders and does quite well with his calls  They sure are loud, but thats what they want in competition.
Spent most of my $$ on huntin, fishin & retrievin dogs, the rest I just pretty much wasted.

I have a brand new Saunders Coupe I would sell you for $80 shipped.
Saves you about $45 off retail and no shipping or tax.
Send me a pm if interested and I can text you pics if you send me your number.

My old DR-85 is brown with Copenhagen stain and still goin strong, it has put many of greenhead feet down in the dekes. You can blow that thing with half a dip stuck down the tube and it still sounds great. Only call I ever had that would not stick no matter how cold it got.

The owner of Mac Island was trying to sell his business on Craigslist, so it might be a good option to look at other options, availability my be a challenge.
