Elk Behaviot in the Pre-pre-rut and pre-rut.
« on: August 25, 2013, 03:13:17 PM »
Just curious from you experts out there-

What types of behaviors are you expecting to see from bulls this next week and then the first week of archery? All of the bulls seem to have disappeared from my cams this week, but I have a boat load of cows. I was expecting to see a few smaller bulls hanging around the cows and then bigger herd bulls in a week or two. I usually hunt the second week and I'm curious what differences in bull behavior I might expect to see in terms of gathering cows and also vocalizations earlier on.

Each year seems completely different to me.  Some years by bow season the elk are all herded up already. Some years they are fired up and ready for a fight coming into a bugle good.  Some years they will answer but stay put and you have to go all the way to them. They are not fired up but interested in who is around.  I just get out opening day and see what the elk are up to and adjust my style of hunting accordingly.  It also varies by area,  I've seen them herded up in one area but still alone in other areas.  I am no expert,  but this year I have not seen bulls with cows yet.  I think with the heat and earlier season we will have to get in their backyard and get close to get a reaction.

My buddy last year had big bulls coming in all summer & fall to his cameras / honey hole and was bragging about the "gimme " in filling his bull tag.  One week before the season they were gone. I think all the hunters putting out stands & last minute scouting sends them deeper.  Have a great season.

Part of the reason they have disappeared from your cams is due to the pre-rut.  The cows are beginning to group up and head away from calf rearing priorities.  The bulls are getting the urge.  Find some cows and bulls won't be too far behind.  The cows are not really interested but the bulls are thinking they may so they are stalking to lay their claim so to speak.

Last year, in my area,I noticed the bulls were with the herd by the 4th day of bow season. But it was significantly hotter weather then.
