Little green hornet !
« on: August 25, 2013, 05:52:07 PM »
I was up scouting last night this morning for a back up area and found a good group of elk spread out in a large basin. gave them a few bugles and got one answer . as I hiked up to the saddle I saw a young cow in the trail so I pulled out the phelps green hornet call I picked up last year. Gave her a few chirps and a bull answered almost immediately ! with in a few minutes a nice 6x6 was stand 125 yards out taking a peek so I shut up. he slipped off so I pulled abugle out and worked the cow calls in , within five minutes I had 4-5 different bulls talking . Looks like a good back up area , but isn't in the best of places to keep your friends if there helping you pack ! Thanks Jason for making great calls , bull pics to follow ! Coach......

I'm not a fan of throwing out bugles and cow calls until you get a bow in your hand.. All it takes is to educate and pressure him..

I'm not really either , except everyone does , It used to really bother me , especially when guys do it out a truck window . If I call at all I try to not get pinned down . the reason I did this weekend was to locate bulls . once I knew that satellite bull was so close I stopped and backed out.

I just love to see the guy riding his quad up the road bugling with a smoke in one hand . then when he stops he tells you that he's scouting !  Jim Horn jr has some good tapes on calling and he talks about inherited instincts in elk really pretty cool to listen to , also he has some good early season techniques.

all this need less calling just educates older bulls on what what were up to as wayne carlton would say put it away till its needed calling from vehicles is wrong tactics
