two bear down
« on: August 26, 2013, 10:57:45 PM »
It was a quick two day hunt but well worth the drive over east. We got there Friday night just before dark so we did a little scouting through some orchards and found no sign what so ever. The next morning we decided to ditch the orchards do to the lack of ripe apples and put some ground under our feet. The next morning we had planned to hike as far as it would take down a large drainage that seems to always produce a good number of bear every year due to the amount of berries, water and cover. As luck would have it we spotted our first bear only five minutes into our hike. The jet black bear never gave us a shot as it retreated into the thick brush. We quickly got ahead of him as he worked his way down the drainage listening to him as we went. We suddenly realized the noises we were hearing coming up from the bottom were coming from two different locations. We were on two different bear. We decided to wait out the closest one and three hours later the bear decided to step out and gave my thirteen year old nephew a clear two hundred yard shot. The bear only ran twenty yards before piling up in the thick brush. This was his first bear and he couldn’t be any more exited. It was a beautiful chocolate on bottom blond on top bear closing in on three hundred lbs. I think. The next day the same story played out again with my brother taking a nice 250 lbs chocolate bear. We ended up spending more time this weekend packing meat than hunting.

I'll be the one to say it...

"Only five minutes into our hike..."

Dude, you suck. Not really, just kidding. Good for your nephew and bro. Good memories (and eating) for sure.
