went up to Capitol Forest opening day, even though I rolled into my perspective spot at 430AM someone had beat me to it, I went to the next cut up and waited. glassed till 1115AM, and decided to take off in search of other options. Had seen 12 deer this morning, including a buck that was better at eluding than I was at killing. As I was leaving I noticed my initial spot was vacated, I worked my way to my lookout stump and 10 minutes later this fella steps out. I lined up my vortex scope between the 200-300 hashes on the BDC and dropped this boy with a Nosler 130 grain shooting out of a 1st time hunted 270 Ruger American Rifle right through the boiler. He walked 3 yards and collapsed. If you have not seen the accuracy with the Ruger Americans, I suggest you check them out. Great gun for the money. Later I was able to use a fellow hunters range finder to place the Buck at 279 yards from the stump.
Should be noted, the guy that had beat me there earlier in the morning I had met last year. He came down to see what he missed out on. Told me he had to run to town cause when he went to get some water out of his rig, he noticed that his tire was extremely low on pressure. He was gone about a 1 hour total and that is when I found this little guy, mixed feelings with looking forward to hunting all year and the deer season lasts all of 6 hours, but meat in the freezer is a good thing. Time to clean the rifle and stock up on supplies for Elk camp next.
