The waptus suggestion is kinda out of your prior description.  Waptus is 10 miles and you aren't at the hunting when you get there, you're a ways off. So if you have 10 miles as a base line you've opened up 75% of the wilderness.

Prepare for wet.  Boots should be waterproof. Solid rain gear. Wet sack for your interior pack area or a combo that will suit as a pack cover. Tarp aside from your tent so that if you are stuck in a bad situation you have an emergency shelter.  Bag should have a water repellent surface, a bivy to put around it or both.

Bring less food than you think. It's weight expensive and I never eat what I think I will.  If you want solitude, stay away from lakes or heads of basins with trails leading to them, and any obvious and easy to reach side basins of same.  Plan around water, running out of it sucks.

Consider being very spartan and mobile.  A lot of country is walked right by.  That doesn't mean no game it means it doesn't give wide big expanses and so it's overlooked. Some trail systems will provide a series of small pocket basins that you can try. Because they have no obvious camp sites, no huge expanse, no lake and no trail to their front door you can likely find a number of such places on your map.  If you don't see deer, all that means is you don't see em, they may be there, be patient.  Have low expectations.  Have high spirits. Have adventure.

Good luck Savagehunter.  You sound like a great dad.  I wish you and your son good luck on your hunt.

I will ask my hunting partner if he minds if I PM you some tips on locations to find bucks.  We used to hunt the Alpine area near Waptus Lk but haven't for years, though we do talk about going back one of these years, so we may not want to give up some spots.

I can say that you made a good choice not going to the Olympics.  You are headed in a good direction.
May I always be the kind of person my dog thinks I am.

I really have to say thank you very much to everyone the advice has been sound and the encouragement much needed I am a little intimidated by this hunt but feel much more confident now ; not that we will score a kill but that we wont get killed LOL. This site is really great with a bunch of very nice people .just goes to show hunters are some of the greatest people in the world. I want my kid to be like that when he grows up we live in Everett and other then camping and the occasional visit to my relatives in Oregon the city is all he knows.i hate that; keeping all my kids on the straight and narrow is really hard when they see so much drugs and crap in downtown Everett. So thank you for helping me fight the good fight.

Savagehunter,
I think you and your son will have a great time regardless of what you see.

I find it funny that Silk is treating you like this. Last year I took him on his very first backpack hunt of his life.

PM me and I will help you find a spot for the high hunt where you and your son can hopefully have a successful hunt.

The only man who never makes a mistake, is the man who never does anything!!
The further one goes into the wilderness, the greater the attraction of its lonely freedom.
