hot weather meat cooling advise

looking for best way to cool an animals body temp this time of year  especially on eastside

Separate the meat from the femur. It holds a lot of heat.

When hubby got his deer early season last year (daytime highs were in the mid 80's) we gutted it right away, high tailed it home (we live abt 30-45 min drive from our hunting ground), washed it down with the garden hose, dropped a bagof ice (from the grocery store) into the rib cavity, and turned a fan on it as we got it skinned. We were pleasantly surprised with how well the meat cooled off  :tup:


If your a ways from home Id say stop by the closest gas station & grab ice to pack it...

First thing I would do is get the hide off, then quarter it and get the meat in the shade, hang the quarters if you can if not get the meat off the ground by using what ever is available on the ground like logs etc. so air can circulate around it.

Hide off everything ASAP.  Hang the quarters and then you can make deep cuts all the way to the leg bone (follow muscle lines) to aid in more rapid cooling.  Helps to prevent bone sour.

Did exactly this on Sunday with a deer we got in Entiat.  Skin ASAP, put blocks of ice in coolers, then set the quarters on ice.  Don't let the meat sit in water though.

I have an old window mount air conditioner that I can put in my shed to make a kind of a redneck walk-in cooler.  That is the only thing that I use that old AC unit for and it works pretty well.

I have two huge Colman coolers.   I bone it out and layer the ice then meat then ice then meat.  Keep the drain open.  I has stayed in that cooler for 5 days in 90 degree weather.  I kept adding ice but the meat was fine.  Made a heck of a mess to the trailer and the poor folks who were riding my tail while heading home from Arizona.    :chuckle:

huge marine cooler mostly full of ice with dry ice on top when hunting hot weather,  the dry ice will keep your regular ice frozen for a loong time.


when you get something toss the dry ice or it'll freeze your meat

Bone out all the meat then use doubled up contractor garbage bags or I use dry sacks and set them in a creek just make sure to keep the meat dry. Works great if you can't get all the meat out before dark and need to leave overnight when it's excessively hot.
