Opening day success
« on: September 04, 2013, 04:23:52 PM »
Well we got on a nice bull Monday night and located him early opening day. Stalked him for about an hour then had some rouge hunters come through and spook hiim. So after trying to get in front of him we went back and found his cows. Then we just waited and he came down the hill to our left. As soon as we had a clear shot my buddy smoked him at 37 yards. One right to the liver. Stopped in his tracks my buddy put another text book shot into both lungs. Well he finally went down in a creek.  Good hunt, great shots and we all have meat to eat. Great success. Now I have both seasons to fill my tag.  :chuckle:

Sure is. I'm prepping for a banning.

Stand by.

Thanks everybody. Here is a pic of the rack. I know you all like a nice rack. We were blessed. The shooter is a sailor on a sub and has only had 3 days in the last 10 years to hunt. That was one happy guy.

Thought it was a 3x3 with single eyeguards?  Or is it a 5x5 missing double eyeguards?

Nice story and fun hunt!

Thanks. It was a fun hunt. He had never done a spot and stalk before, always hunted from tree stands. The GMU was 516 and the Navy Officer is originally from Missouri so this was extra special for him. This was his first time elk hunting and his wife will be proud to have those horns on her wall. Tonight I'm heading back out, hope to get mine.

The liver was still intact, almost cut in half, but I salvaged it. Got the heart too  I thought it was pretty good shooting. The liver shot stopped him and when he turned he got punched in the lungs.

That's a good story. But is it the whole story? I heard it told a little differently. Good job anyways, glad you guys got it rather than than that grumpy old "rogue" hunter. Congrats.

Sounds like you know some of the drama. You must mean the old guy with a crossbow that missed a 500lb animal at 20 yards.  :bash: I try not to focus on dumb hunters and the things that go on. It just ruins a good hunt when you come across "grumpy" people. In the end it all worked out. We'll be eating backstrap under a nice rack.
