St Helens

I thought I saw a thread on here about Mt St Helens but cant find it.  I'm heading to Mt St Helens this weekend to say I've seen it lol.  My question is, is it worth my time to look around the area for bears on my way back?

They are there.  Had one run across the trial in front of me 2 years ago while I was climbing St. Helens.  Talk about brown noting it.  Alone on a trail at 5 am with nothing but a head lamp illuminating otherwise sheer blackness.   :yike:

At the crater a park ranger said, he thinks that you can get a permit to hunt the elk. If i was you i would  state fish and game up their to find out what part you can.  I saw some guys on houres bsck and they had orange gear bags on the houres and a 3rd houres in geussing for a meat packer. I would call somone :dunno:

Doesn't the 560 unit run all the war up to the crater on the south east side?

Idk :dunno:. I asked the ranger and he thinks that have file for a permit. He found 40 elk rite below the crater on a spiting scop. I think it would be better for elk then bear. Im far from an expert :o

yes  the 560 is open to hunting up to the eastern edge and then west along the crater. Look in the area descriptions in the game regs. You might need a climbing permit to be on the mountain is probably what the ranger is talking about.

I've been looking for a place to hunt elk too so maybe I'll look into that area.  I was planning on stopping along the way back and just glass clear cuts and see if I can find any berries since I'll be out that way

No it is a national monument for the time being despite the push to make it a national park. The areas that are not open to hunting are closed because it is in the Loowit unit.

I was in that area this weekend and heard a couple of bugles in the distance (or people bugling) at daybreak. I also heard and saw around a hundred berry pickers spread out over the couple of immediate ridges. No animal poop (lots of human), fresh tracks, or anything that got my blood flowing. The area's beautiful, though.
