For the third afternoon in a row I've had elk make a chuckling sound while in my stand. What does this usually mean. I am deer hunting the area but there is elk sign everywhere. I have seen three bulls in the area last week prior to opening.

It's been my experience that they like to do it in high traffic/highly hunted areas. It's a lot more subtle and "sneaky" than a full on bugle. The other scenario I've seen and witnessed is a smaller subordinate bull with cows trying to round up more without drawing to much attention to himself and loosing the ones he has to a bigger bull.
