Let's talk about CCW again
« on: September 06, 2013, 06:54:59 PM »
I am proud to say that my concealed carry permit finally showed up! The Seattle courthouse where you apply for that has a room that seems to be only used for two purposes, CCW permit applications and new sex offender registry. So I had about an hour to play "what are YOU here for?" while I waited for my turn to get fingerprinted. It was fun.

Anyway, now I need a good concealed carry pistol. I'm leaning toward the LC9, but can't find one anywhere. I want a decent balance between carry-ability and  shootability. In the warmer months, it will be in my waistband, but in the winter, I usually wear a long, pea coat style wool coat with deep pockets. What do you guys think? What's your favorite? Just as a personal note, it drives me crazy when I can't get all three fingers around the grip.

There are many awesome single stack 9mm pistols on the market right now.

While the LC9 is adequate, I recommend looking at an M&P Shield.  It's very easy to carry and it shoots like a full size.

Are you set on a 9?  A 1911 in .45 ACP is pretty slim.  For a 9, Kahr makes some really compact stuff.

Camp what do you think of the XDS? How does it shoot? I just looked at a Kimber Master Carry Pro 3" barrel, very nice, but pricey.

I'm not married to the 9, but I already have one and I like to consolidate calibers. Plus, 9mm is a good balance of power vs. overpenetration for where I will be carrying, which is in the city. I also have a sp101 in .357 that I won't carry down there for that reason.

I'd love a 1911, but they are more money than I wanted to spend on this one. The Kahr CW9 seems very well reviewed and can be picked up for under 400. Anyone have one of those?

I like it a lot. It shoots nice for a compact and doesn't have a bad kick at all. I put the Pearce extensions on the mag for my big hands. I also put the Packmayr rubber grips on it too. Those are OK, but really rubbery feeling unlike the Hogue grips. I bought it off of Gunbroker for $ 450 + $35 shipping.

Where did you see a master carry on the shelf at?  They were supposedly just shipped in August according to the few folks I have talked to.

Kahr PM9 is my EDC.
I put a Hogue grip on it and with the extended magazine, feels great.
You're welcome to shoot it.

I really like the Sig 938.

The Kahr p9/CW9 are good. I have found the K9 (all steel, little heavier) fits better and I shoot it better. The sp101 in .357 can definitely be used in an urban environment- it just depends on ammo relection.

My son has a CW9, its been reliable, decent to shoot and carries well.  Myself who packs either a 1911 of some flavor or a S&W 3913, depending on season etc, even likes it.

Sig P938.   9mm, 1911 style controls, good night sights, and barely bigger than an LCP.  Skip the laser if you are trying to keep it affordable.

Are you set on a 9?  A 1911 in .45 ACP is pretty slim.  For a 9, Kahr makes some really compact stuff.

I have a Kahr CW40, and three friends and BIL with either Kahr 9 or .40.   We love them. Carries well, slim, and can get three fingers on the grip, which is also important to me. The only drawback to me is the long trigger pull, but it is smooth the whole way through.   As far as carry, i use either an IWB holster for a 1911 by the maker Gote, or a Kydex holster from Gunfighters Inc.   the Gote holster was only $20 but is surprisingly comfortable and conceals deep in my waistband. The Gunfighters inc has exceptional retention. I could do cartwheels and the Kahr stays put. (May have to try that just to verify). Anyway, back on track. I think you would be hard pressed to find a better "bang" for your buck with a Kahr, whether it's a 9 or 40.

Edit to add:  cartwheel test completed. Passed.  But not sure I will do anymore of those tests.  A few too many years have passed since doing one of those. Still capable but deffinitly not in my prime cartwheeling condition any more. Best to keep both feet firmly planted!

being you have a 9mm already Ill say the S&W shield or a S&W J-frame. the J-frame is light and easy to hide and you can shoot .38 out of your .357. Not a fan of Rugers or Kel-tec's please don't flame me for it, but they are just not for me personally and its just my :twocents:

I didn't like the lack of safety on the Kahr. It doesn't have the opposing pressure releases like the XDs do, only one on the trigger and I couldn't get past that. My new LC9CL is really nice and for how small it is, surprisingly controllable.
