Late season tactics
« on: October 26, 2008, 09:37:24 AM »
I am going late archery hunting this year and had a couple questions. I found a couple places this early season where elk hang out but was unable to close the deal(again).  My question is so elk normally hang out in the same type of areas in the late season that they do in the early season. We found some thick areas with tons of sign on the last day of our hunt and were wondering if they will still be in the thick stuff.

i think it depends on westside or eastside and weather snow is a factor or not.

i know where i hunt (cabin creek, on the eastside) the elk will start moving as soon as there is around 8" of snow on the ground. and they start to stick into the heavy wooded areas where the snow cant penitrate through the dense limbs

Most likely the elk will be in the thick stuff until we get some weather. But this morning the cows were moving around but that was becase they were bumped. :dunno:

OOPS- sorry forgot to mention the area we hunt is on the west side. It is not high up at all. luckily it is an area without many driveable roads. However there are a few people around for early season. Last year we went down for late season and did not see a thing. However after seeing where they were headed this year we could have walked right by them without even knowing it. It was frozen down there last year when we went but no snow. Not sure if this makes a difference.

Given that you are on the westside, I think the elk will be in the same general location year round.
