Where are these things?
« on: September 12, 2013, 02:15:30 PM »
I do not normally do this, but I am going to ask for advice today!

I have been putting in a LOT of miles both on my boots and with the truck these past couple of weeks looking for these bears in the northeast corner and have had no luck.  I'm hunting mostly in unit 113.  I have been seeing almost no sign, and have still not laid eyes on a bear.  Normally by this time I would have at least glassed a few.  I guess my question to all of you is where should I start looking with the berries gone?  I have no clue what to do at this point in time.  I have always had great success hunting the berry patches, but not this year and I really do not have a back up plan.  Not looking for any spots, just advice.  Thanks All!

Thanks deaner, I think that is the next tactic I have planned.  Never had this much trouble and any advice anyone has at this point is awesome!

boneaddict, I have been hunting huckleberries mostly.  Thimble berries have not shown much sign and if I can find choke cherries I hunt those.

Nothing beats a bear hunting trip when you come back with purple hands!

I've been spending a lot of time in or near huckleberries, in the same general area.  Several weeks ago there was scat everywhere.  Now, nothing.  No fresh bear sign anywhere that I've been.

I'd say get the bags out and pick a bunch of huckleberries for the freezer. I heard from a guy today that had been hunting that area hard and hardly seen any bears this year. He has hunted it for years and this early season became a berry picking trip. I was up there 2 weeks ago and the berries were thick, but no fresh bear sign where I was. So not sure how to answer your questions. Wolves changing the equation??????

Not finding any good huckleberries anymore.  Climbed to over 5000ft today and everything was bone dry.
