Seals!
« on: September 10, 2013, 12:09:54 PM »
 >:(  I had 2 fish stolen from me this morning and one disemboweled by the nasty thieves.  I was able to smack one with the net and get him to let go just long enough to pull this ripped up pink on board.  I need some rubber 12g slugs.  >:(

I keep a wrist rocket on board to help with the seals. Bonk one on the melon with a marble and they leave you alone.

Ever blast one with bear spray?  Don't know if it is true or not, but there was a fat one that used to hang out at a hatchery and didn't mind rocks...but some bear spray and the seal left town.  :dunno:

Awe, leave the poor, cute little buggers alone, he was just trying to help you bleed it out.   :chuckle:  Couple weeks ago I heard/saw a seal bomb go off near a boat out off Eagle Point, thought it was pretty gutsy with as many boats as there were.  Maybe a native on board.   :dunno:

Hey, if you ask the marine mammal folks, seals mostly eat herring so I don't think it was a seal.   :bash:  Last year I was chatting with a charter captain as he was cleaning some salmon in Anacortes and a seal popped up on the dock within a foot of me, without thinking, I layed a good solid kick to the side of his head as he flopped back into the water, it wasw strangely satisfying....

so I know its the marine mammal act that makes things hard but why wont the state and feds do more about seals like wolves?  such a big problem with salmon populations I would think you have a lot of support for limiting population or better hazing to keep them away from congregation areas.  I know in sound they sit and watch the boats and as soon as one rode bends over you can watch all of them start heading toward that boat.  it is really impressive how smart they are to figure that out.  might have more to do with fish struggling under water.  just count how many you see next time out and think of how many each one eats or disembowels everyday way more catch then the guys on boats.

sounds like a great group effort sportsmen, tribal and commercial interest and since money talks salmon are a far great economical resource then seals.  not saying get rid of but like wolves keep numbers in check.  to truly be conservationists can not only manage open link in the chain.
