Winch talk

Hey guys. I just bought a trailer for the samurai and got a winch with it. It's a z3500 warn. So my master plan is to mount it on the samurai and use it on the trailer just when needed. I am wondering if it will be enough. Or if I should just cough up the money for a bigger winch. My samurai weighs in at around 2600lbs.

If you're only going to use it for the trailer, I'd mount it on the trailer. It's not big enough for the Sammy. Get a bigger one for that.
It'd probably work ok for pulling it onto the trailer.

I'd use it. Double up with a snatch block and you get 2x's the pulling power, 7000lbs.

It will work,  I second the snatch block recommendation.  You will run into trouble maybe if pulling dead weight straight through the mud but with assistance from the sammie it should do good.

The snatch block is a great idea. I would help it with the samurai and would for sure not be pulling just dead weight with it. I have yet to get the samurai stuck and tried pretty hard last year. Fixed my transfer case and now she is a machine. I would for sure try to help it and not pull dead weight. I also thought it would be nice to use with the 1200' of rope I have to drag a critter out if needed. Just half hitch the rope ever so often when I run out of winch line.

I hadn't even looked in the box or dug threw it yet. Picked up the trailer and tossed everything in the truck. Just went and dug threw it and low and behold a brand new 7 warn snatch block still sealed in the box!!! Got to love free surprises

I'd probably put it on the Sammy . The little that I have seen them rigs run you have to work to getem stuck. Great rigs! That winch will have enough pull doubled up for sure.

You guys have to remember that the rating of the winch is for the first layer of wire rope. The more rope you peel off the less the winch can actually pull. I'm with the other guys mount it on the trailer and buy a bigger one for the Sami.

You've got it backwards. A winches rated pull is with a single layer of cable left on the spool. The more you spool out,the more it'll pull.

Keep in mind that if you're depending on a snatch block for heavy pulls that you may not have enough line if your anchor point its too far away for doubling up. I've been stuck a few times where the only anchor point was almost the distance of the cable length.

I had 2 on my toyota. A warn m8000 and a smitty built xrc8. Both great winches and the price of the smitty built can't be beat I'd leave the little one strictly for the trailer.

Put it on the removable stinger and use for the Sami and the trailer. If you burn it up re brush it.... Or rebrush it then buy a new bigger winch.
