For you hunters that like the waterfowl legs like the skin of the bird as well because they taste about the same IMO?  Duck  or goose skin is bad.

There's this cool thing called a skinning knife, take the skin off and eat them.  Do you eat the skin on the breast?  :dunno:  People eat chicken wings and there is just as much meat, and more, on a ducks leg.

well I am happy he explained it to these people that the breast meat is all that's edible on Fowl ...unless you like eating  Head ..legs and feathers  :chuckle:

Really?  I've never eaten heads or feathers, but eight pounds of legs from a weekend's hunt is a bit of meat, that's two stuffed full gallon sized ziplocs.  Are you agreeing with this idiot from WDFW?

Well I guess leaving it on a public beach is not the thing to do ...but I do not eat legs off of fowl ...Eagles should have made fast work of them ...wonder why they did not ...I know when I used to hunt the bay ,you could not dump a pintail without an eagle snatching him up 1st ...

It's lazy to not take goose legs.  It's even lazier to not throw the carcasses in your garbage can at home.

:yeah: some good meat on goose legs,I try not to waste anything mainly for karma purposes :) even use the heart, liver and gizzard :EAT:.

Had a neighbor up the road dump a buncha breasted out snow geese in the woods behind his house, a day or two later between the neighborhood dogs, coyotes and coons they had them all stung out along and in the main highway :o People freaked and it even got the newspapers attention.

well from having a good pile of family that live in sequim, i know there are plenty of antis over there, those geese could be from the dueshwaffle golfers that are antis to boot that killed them on the golf course or on there little keep clean no geese farm and set up to look like hunters, wouldnt be the first time.... as for useable meat on waterfowl, i have no clue, i dont hunt ducks or geese, i tried but i am sorry the meat on geese or ducks taste really NASTY, i tried everything, although a fillet of duck breast rolled in ritz cracker crumbs and wrapped in bacon and fried till completly done wasnt to bad, i dont even hunt the lake i live on because i wont eat them, and it looks like some fine shootn

Sure was a dumb thing to do. With all the teaching about ethics and hunters in the public light during the Hunter Ed course, I would imagine this was done by older hunters who either haven't taken it at all or who took it many decades ago. It's a shame that someone doing this wouldn't be able to see the damage they do to our sport. And, they'll probably be the most vocal complaining about it when we lose our privileges.

Before all these insults lets look at DU and Delta recipes.  The vast majority that I see call for the breast meat only. I sure there is something that can be found on waterfowl legs but still the facts remain breast meat is only called for in most of these recipes.

http://www.ducks.org/hunting/recipes
http://www.deltawaterfowl.org/hunting/recipes.php

That should answer 3rz question the breast meat is about the only useable meat.

Sorry but I look at facts before opinion to do my best to answer questions.  If someone wants to make pillows out of the feathers or leg fatty stew thats awesome, but doesn't answer the question.
Don't read my post if facts hurt your feeling.

The use or not of leg meat has little to do with the public perception of these carcasses left out to rot on the beach. The real problem is that 97% of the people who saw that will now have a negative view of hunting from the experience. Hunters who aren't sensitive to public perception will be the reason we lose our rights, not the fringe anti-hunting groups out there. The anti-hunting groups will do nothing but benefit from this.

As we're less than 4% of the population, it's more like screw us. We have to police our own ranks if we want to keep our hunting privileges.

I'm lucky. My duck carcasses go to the back of my property abutting woods and a family of Red Tail Hawks  and an occasional Eagle make fast work of the edibles. Sometimes, even Mr. Coyote joins in. A time or two I've found a duck hanging in the barbed wire next to the place I put them and couldn't figure out how they got there until I witnessed one of the hawks try to carry  a duck off and it got hung up as the bird tried to fly over the fence to its nest.

So if an elk recipe calls for the sirloin roast, does that mean it's the only useable portion of meat on the carcass?  Sorry, your logic is a little flawed.  It's the equivalent of tossing the shanks and shoulders on a big game animal.  No, they aren't prime cuts and may or may not be enough to get you cited for wastage.  It is, however, poor form when viewed by the eye of the non-hunting public, and is also a waste of useable and edible meat.

Geese are over-populated. They cause issues on golf courses, in parks, airports, lakes, etc. They're like flying rats.

I agree people shouldn't dump carcasses where the general public is going to see them. However I can't blame someone for not putting them in their garbage can, just to be hauled off to the nearest landfill. In a weekend of goose hunting you could easily have enough goose carcasses to fill up your entire garbage can.

And as for the meat on the legs, in my opinion that's up to each individual hunter if they want to go to all the work of getting a few ounces of extra meat off each carcass. I don't care if they do or not.

As I said, there are too many geese as it is, people should be grateful there are hunters willing and able to help keep the numbers in check.

I have never had duck or goose, but I only breast out pheasant and wild turkey. The rest is un edible IMO.
