Crap
« on: September 26, 2013, 08:49:57 PM »
After not getting out but a few times this season, I made one last ditch effort tonight.  We had soccer practice so I basically had to road hunt a few spots on the way home the last 40 minutes of light.  3 areas, deer in all three, couldn't get close enough.

The one I really wanted was a BIG doe.  Grabbed the bow from the van, snuck quickly to the fence line, she's at 80 yards and I start my stalk.  Get to within 40 and go to hook my release to the string and damnit!!!  I left the release in the van.  I have 2 options, return to the van to get the release or try to finger shoot.  I have not practiced finger shooting this bow at all so, I make the decision to try to return to the van and re-stalk.  Got back to the van and then half way back to a spot where I could stalk again and blew her out.  :bash:

Always late season and there's no soccer in December so I can dedicate more time to hunting  :IBCOOL:

I am now after this doe.  She is BIG.  Nice red coat too.  Calling her "Big Red".  I went out right after work and had a set up I thought would work tonight.  It took her the grand total of 15 seconds from the time she showed up to the time when she blew out.  I still heard her snorting 100 yards into the woods.  It'll have to wait until December now but, it's game on.  Pretty funny attitude to have about a doe but, IMO, I've been challenged and I must answer.

My dad said if she continued to snort all that way, at least a dozen snorts as she went, that means there's bucks in the area.  Any truth to that?

No, I don't think so. Not sure why that would mean there's a buck in the area? The snorting or blowing as I call it, is to alert other deer of the danger. At least that's what I assume. I'm no biologist. But then I don't know if biologists really understand what deer say either, do they?

I think he meant that she knew there were other deer in the area and was making darned sure they all knew I was there

not that i know with any xcertainty why sometimes they blow a lot, and for a long way, but the impression i kind of get from the deer ive spooked (which has been more than id like to admit) is that if you spook them and they KNOW what you are, theyll blow a few times and be off.  the deer ive spooked that blew a lot and for a long distance like that seem to be the ones that know something spooked them, but werent able to fully identify / locate me.  once again, just the impression ive gotten and a pattern ive noticed, but i could be way off track there

That would be a better sign than her laughing I guess :chuckle:

I missed my chance on a big doe this morning too. All soaking wet I decided to get the hell outta there and get some food and I start stompin my way out to look up and find doe-saurus lookin at me fumble an arrow outta my quiver.... she bounced..

Thats kinda what ive thought too. Ive also thought that maybe they were trying to blow any snot or crud outta their nose so they can smell exactly what you are???

From my experience I have found that a big old doe that hasn't smelled you but knows something is not right will blow, and blow a lot.
