I took my daughter to the shooting day they had in August, GREAT group of folks I am sure you will have a great time .
They put on a great youth shooting event and I'll bet the youth pheasant hunt will be even better.

I wish we could go, but my son is taking the hunter's Ed class this weekend. Enjoy!

Lots of birds and not many kids  :(.  Dog did great, of the 40 birds that were released on our site he found 9  :IBCOOL:. If I could just get the kids to hit one every now and then  :chuckle:. I bought this dog for the kids to hunt behind (pointing lab) he points... I tell the kids... they get ready..... I send dog in, and bird flushes.....shots fired and bird flies away without being touched  :bash:. I remember now why when I was learning to hunt and HIT a pheasant my old dog would just catch them for me  :chuckle: at least then she got the bird she worked so hard to find.

At the end of the hunt dog was tired, kids were beat, I was tired of walking/climbing through clear cut, birds were all safe, sun was coming out and we are all ready to go back tomorrow .

My husband took two out siblings out one a first time hunter (girl) and the other (boy) has duck hunted.  They were able to get their first pheasants in two days worth of hunting.  Everyone was happy, dog, my husband, the kid's parents  and everyone who got to watch.  Pheasant dinner at our house tonight!!!! Now she wants to kill a deer.  She has already shot the rifle.  It is so much fun taking kids hunting.  More fun than hunting myself, the same rush!!!  I just wish I had more time.

Sounds like lots of folks had a great time .
I got up at 0600 today and watched the weather, saw all the bright yellow/orange over our hunting area and went back to bed  :chuckle:. It was raining hard enough from 0800-1300 that the kids were OK with not going but I think the dog was bummed  :chuckle:.

Yesterday my son got his two around 10am, and today by 8:20am. We had a good GSH with us both day, but today my son used an 870 20 gauge that we picked up last night.

Thanks fellas. Drake made some kids smile for sure. And yes, he is a rock star. He draws attention to himself everywhere we go. It just makes my head get bigger and bigger. Not as big as his though. Yesterday we picked up a kid who has never hunted pheasant before. I gave him one rule...DONT SHOOT MY DOG! We were done in 24 minutes. Nowhere close to Drakes record on boxed chickens but we walked slowly and gingerly due to my knee hurting like a mo-fo. Its fun to BS and exchange stories with the kids and their parents. Plus, Ive been doing this for a long time and it was fun to catch up with some of the releasers and whatnot. The BBQ was going and drinks were cold so it was easy to hang out for a couple hours afterwards. So the kid wanted my number so he could call me and let me know if he was coming back out today. And yes, this was all ok with his father. Needless to say I got a call from a very excited 14 year old last night saying he wanted to hunt with Drake again. So I iced the knee and prepared myself for a wet hunt this morning. I wanted to make it a little more challenging for the youngster so we waited til the rest of the hunters made their way down range. We went in 10 minutes behind a father/daughter and their female black lab. I wanted all the "dazed' birds removed from the equation. Needless to say drake picked up a rooster off the bat. Aswing and a miss for the kid. further down range Drake put up a hen and the kid knocked it down. Drake put up 5 more birds in the next 20 minutes before the kid finally connected on a nice rooster. All in all, even dealing with great pain, i would do it again and again, hoping to light the pheasant fire in these kids. the best part is I met a great, respectable and very mature young man. He will be playin Yelm here in a couple weeks so i am gonna go watch him play. If I am fortunate enough to get out for myself this season, The kid will be invited every time. Hats off to JBLM and their volunteers who make this possible. What a fantastic weekend! I will load pictures shortly. Again, with permission.

I recognize that young man from this mourning. good shooting! And you cant go wrong with the 870. Its still my favorite go to gun, even after all these years of shooting birds.

Great photo.! You must be a proud parent with that one!
