It's was raining today and I got a little bored...
« on: September 23, 2013, 12:47:47 AM »

I'm hoping to get some underwater strikes on film. Hoping to use it on anything that we troll for but really looking forward to next years Sockeye season.

Very cool! I have been wanting to build one. Did you find plans online or do you have plans you are willing to share?

Can't wait to see some videos!

Yes. Look up troll pro on YouTube and you'll find some videos. Much cheaper to bulls your own though.

BigD.....

In our waters I've had luck down to 35 feet. I took the housing, very similiar to yours, and clipped it right to the downrigger ball. Smooth water is a must because it will pivot up and down. I took a standard release, snipped the leader off, and ziptied it to the top eye of the rigger ball. Keep the gear about 4 feet back and send it down. I found the fish didn't mind the closeness to the ball.

I searched online using diy trollpro as my starting point. It's made out of 2" PVC fittings. All of the hardware is stainless steel.

The parts list:
1-2" end cap.
2-2" unions.
1-4" x 2" reducer.
6" 2" PVC
1 large tear drop zinc.
1-1/4'" eye bolt, washer, lock washer and nut.
1-1" 1/4" x 20 washer, lock washer and nut for tripod mount.
1-Gopro tripod mount.
1 pool noodle for flotation.
I also ran a short piece of 250lb test power pro inside from the towing eye bolt to the back of the Gopro and attached it with a heavy duty swivel.

D......

I skipped the zinc......attached tot he ball it tracks perfectly. Other than that though we built about the same thing. Good luck and I hope you get some footage.

Is this one attached to the ball with a length of cable?  With it attached solid to the ball it seems like you would see almost every movement the boat makes. If you were to put a couple feet between them would it help? What do you think?

You are correct....mine is hooked directly the ball with a clasp. Every time the boat goes up and down it amplifies the movement of the housing. The trick would be to find a way to A) run the housing as far back as possible to eliminate movement B) still keep the line w/lure in line with housing and C) keep the gear in line AND directly in the eye of the camera.

I have not figured out a way to run it back and keep everything in line yet..........

You should check out some of Charlie White’s videos.  He pioneered underwater video imaging of salmon strikes.

I have seen some of his vids. I think the one he did that studied the affect of the direction of the trolling path compared to the sun.....night and day difference. Some people still troll directly into the sun......it makes a difference.
