GMU 117
« on: September 18, 2013, 11:03:12 AM »
I just got permission to hunt on this land I've been asking about for the last couple years so I'm excited anyways I've never hunted in 117 and I was wondering where I would find the harvest stats from last year

I wouldn't have a problem with that I've never shot a bear or a buck or turkey so I'd be happy with a bear or a buck plus it looks like he meets the 4 point minimum for 117 so I was excited to see that

Shooting a bear off of that cob would be baiting and against the law.

I believe it would also be illegal to shoot turkeys on bait.

okay guys, we all know its illegal to bait bear and birds.  he has the bait up in front of a camera, for scouting purposes, and never said he wanted to shoot a bear over bait.  lets not jump to conclusions and be internet police.  we can give him the benefit of the doubt right?

I thought I read that he'd have no problem with bears coming into his sweet corn because he'd never shot one...

That's what I said its there for deer when I was talking to the property owner he said he hasn't seen bear on his property in a few years and he thought the turkeys were buy the other tree stand so I just assumed I was just putting it out for the deer. I know baiting illegal for bear but I put it out for deer

That's why I don't like posting stuff on here I was excited about using a trail cam for the first time and saying how I put out the corn for deer season and because I think it'd be cool to see a bear on my cam now I'm illegally hunting bear? That's just crazy

No one accused you of anything. I read it as people are informing you, in the event that you aren't aware, that if a bear happens to come in to your legal deer bait, you might not want to talk about shooting it.

We were talking about seeing what's coming through the area not weather to shoot or not I was just saying I'm new at hunting so when I see stuff like that its exciting even just to know what's in the area because yeah I might see one on my cam but why would that mean that is where I have to shoot it? There was no reason to jump to conclusions when I was talking about the 4x4 I saw and hoping there are more bucks that will come for the corn

Pay no attention to them tommythebarber! Just enjoy the pics and go kill that nice little four point! If you get pics of bears, turkeys, or Bigfoot, it's all bonus footage. Oh yeah go ahead and shoot Bigfoot, there's nothing in the regs against it. :chuckle:
If we were supposed to be vegetarian God would have made broccoli more fun to shoot!
"HOYT" why would you even consider shooting something else?

Tommy...you are doing great... go check out the 117/121 thread... sounds like a few guys don't think legal bucks exist in those units and the fact that you have multiple bucks would be unheard of. Are you sure this is 117?  :chuckle:

Those pictures are a great representation of what GMU 117 is crawling with this year.  Some people hear "4 pt minimum" and think they have to find a trophy to kill a legal buck.  Those are typical young bucks that all meet the minimum.

 :cryriver: spike killers

Last Friday, I saw a tiny little 1.5 year old buck with 2x3 mainframes and 2" browtines on both sides.  Legally a 3x4 and he would have scored about 35"

Even if it were a 5 pt minimum TommytheBarber has a few legal deer there to choose from

that first buck is  fine indeed.  his brows must be 4 inches.  if he is close, head shoot him and not ruin any meat.  get'um.  mike w

I wish 113 would have the same 4pt rule.

If you can tell from the pic the tree stand ladder is pretty close but I want to get him mounted so I'd rather not take a headshot

This is my first time hunting in 117, and my first time seriously hunting and going after a buck the last time I went was when I was 15 or 16 and got a doe with no scouting so I was nervous with the 4pt minimum but after scouting and setting up the cam I don't see any problem with it, and there seems to be enough legal deer to choose from at least the area where I'm going to be hunting
