First elk, first archery kill, first bull!
«

September 18, 2013, 06:08:30 PM »
Last saturday 9/14/13 6pm I notched my first elk tag on my 5th season elk hunting.the previous 4 season I had missed an nice bull due to a branch, and shot under a cow using the wrong pin.
Now I fell the redemption!
After not seeing many elk all season driving down to the winston and then coming home early and hunting in the puyallup and issaquah units. I had seen a total of 4 elk. My buddy and I were walking in for the evening hunt and I told him I wanted to sit on a clear cut near the edge he looks at me and says I don't want to hunt a clear cut its way to random. So I told him he can do whatever he wants so he went on down the logging road. I went into the clear cut 80 yds from the edge nocked an arrow and began waiting less than ten minutes.I hear branches crunching looking seeing nothing I grab my binoculars I'm looking and see the nice tan body then the head move it had antlers an extra bonus!
The solo bull started moving into the clear cut towards me and my wind he hit a perfect sixty yds broad side before hit hits my wind I draw and take the shot couldn't tell if I hit him he starts moving slowly towards me the comes right by I couldn't see the shot so I shoot at him again at 20 ft i see the arrow go right through! I knew I had hit him good him now. He moves out to thirty and turns the other way I see my other arrow stuck in him he was still standing so I nocked another arrow go to shoot he moves I just missed him he walks out to the logging road towards my Buddy.
I radio him I just shot a spike you what I shot a spike he was thinkin I shot a deer I said no I shot a spike elk he's coming straight towards you he started walking back and spots him on the road with me sneaking down behind him then the elk winds my buddy and starts a staggering walk into the clear cut and goes down in the middle of the clear cut we decide to wait for 20 minutes before we recover him.. I call home and tel them I just shot my first elk everyone was very excited as they know how much time and effort we have into hunting. Then begins the longest 20 minutes of my life . We talk about it for a bit and decide I'm gonna move in by myself to keep the noise down in case he wasn't finished get to about 40yds from the bull he jumps up and walks to the back edge of the clear cut just before the timber and goes down again so the wait begins againthe next longest 20 minutes of my life I move in again solo he jumps up again stagering into the timber and goes down again we wait again I sneak in again get to 5 ft but can't get a shot he jumps up bucks and kicks runs 20ft and falls over again this time Head down wheezing really hard we could see and hear him he finally expires about 20minutes later we don't hear him breathing or see him moving I walk up and recover him what a great feeling I was A little bit worried when he kept getting up. I made the phone calls I need to make to help get him out and to let my family know we recovered him thanks to my dad and hunting partner Jason for all the help!
It feels great to be able to have something to post about. Sorry for all the gramatical errors and running sentences but I got tired of editing

Congratulations! I'm waiting for that first elk experience. Maybe a lesson in trusting your gut feeling? Super happy for you and what a great looking bull to eat!

Why does my wife hate hunting season so much? Could it be the money I spend that we don't have for it? Or the one week vacation I get each year that I save for hunting only? Or maybe being left with the two kids for weekends at a time? After all that and my areas' harvest success rate for elk is about 5%.

I remember when we used to be able to shoot spikes and two points in the Winston and south. Those were some good tasting eats as I expect that one will be!
Congratulations! RadSav clan is happy for you
