Thinking about staying local this weekend for deer. Anyone know if there's still access into the Mashel country behind Eatonville. Just across the bridge out of Eatonville on the Eatonville cut off rod on the left? Gates open or closed? Fees? Barely know this area and haven't been in there in years. Any info would be good. Thanx folks.

Hancock bought all of that from wehco but scott turner is still state land all the way at the end

Last time I drove Scott Turner all the way was last summer. No gates. You can drive from the Eatonville end but you have to go out past the ORV park, turn right and then come out on Stoner road almost to Ashford. You can't come down the steep road to Elbe except in the summer months before Sept 30.

Well guys, I took a quick drive after work tonight(Fri)to check out the Scott Turner Rd country. Didn't read the post on here about the Discover Pass till just now. Sign posted at the state land boundary but I assumed it was for a State amenity somehere back in. Second sign requiring a Discover Pass and I turned around. Ran into a couple in a PU on the way back and they verified the pass required as they'd gotten a ticket once on that rd. What a bunch of BS. A $30 pass to drive on a bad dirt rd. WDFW ripping off the sportsman again.
Did see two fat does on the private land on the edge of the rd about 100 yds after I left the state land. Go figure, huh.

But in this case it's not the WDFW- it's DNR.

The pack forest is open land no permits needed all hike in though. Its across the street from Hancock's border and south of eatonville.

Misguided criticism. WDFW only gets 8% of the funds. This isn't their gig.

Yep pack forest is good too.  Ive seen some nice bucks come out of there.  Theres a good spot off alder mashel rd that can hold some good deer. Pm if you want more info. I grew up out here.

At least you saw something.  I too drove the Scott Turner Friday after work.  Only saw grouse and a few guys shooting their fire sticks. Stopped at one of the gates near the top and walked in a mile or so but turned around after not seeing any fresh sign.   Ran into one other hunter on my way out after driving all the way to Ashford and back.

New to the area so exploring is fun but I sure would like to put some meat in the freezer.

One mile from any scott turner gate is 2-3 miles not far enough. Those animals go to private land to avoid guys that only walk a mile from the gate. Lol. That's where you'll find the fresh sign within a mile of the gate. Plenty of deer and elk 3-4 miles in but most guys won't walk or bike that far so that's where they go.

If you actually read the regulations for the discover pass areas its only if you park or use their trails that the pass is required. I drive through their crappy discover pass area and back into the areas where it isn't required. I usually have someone with me as well so if I do have to stop and go up a hill after I deer I'll just have them drive the truck around until I come back down.  to the DNR idiots!
