DIY Montana Mtn. Goat down.
« on: September 19, 2013, 08:52:35 PM »
Day three of a four day blast to Montana.  Got snowed out in day two.  Glassed him up on a steep cliffy  mtn  and started the hike.  Got all the way up to where we had seen them.  Found their tracks and started following.  Came around a rock out cropping and there he was standing about 35  yards away, one shot and it was done.

Very cool.

You only allotted 4 days to a DIY mountain goat hunt??  I understand work schedule pressures, etc., but I would have thought 1 week or so at a minimum.  (Maybe you really know the area.)  Please tell a longer story, this could be of great value to us all.

Congratulations.  I am always impressed by DIY hunts.

I had a lot more time, but my hunting partner didn't and it would have been an extra 1400  miles of driving and I have a very sick girl at home, so had to get it done and get home.. better than not getting to go at all.  I didn't know the area, but researched it a lot and talked to past tag  holders. Because of that, we saw over 20  billies  in  two and a half days.  Had to use the rifle due to time constraints, but could have done it with the bow... next goat tag will be bow only.

Way to go, norsespeak! And, I hope your sick girl gets healthy soon.

Congrats Ty. It's amazing what you can do as far as scouting goes by using tools at hand. Nothing tops boots on the ground, but the Internet and such goes a long way if you know how to use it.

Don't fall into the trap. Hunting is-and always will be- about the hunt, the adventure, the views, and time spent with close friends and family. " Ryan Hatfield
