Hello all, I hunted for the first time last year and came upon a 2x2 muley by luck. Took him down from a distance of 50 meters with my rifle. I wasn't even expecting him due, to the fact I was making all kinds of noise. Hell I just got out of my vehicle about 5 mins ago and started walking, BAM he jumped out in front of me and then looked at me. He stood still for about 1 min before he finally turned and gave me the kill shot. between the ribs and out the other side, piercing his lungs. Didn't hit a single rib on both sides.
So here comes my issue so to speak. I am taking my 9YO out for his first time and have not had a chance to get to GMU 101 to scout and will not get the chance unitl the day before hunt starts for Modern Rifle. I know that it is any buck until youth season kicks in and then it is any deer for him. I have been lurking on the forums for quite some time now and kind of have an idea of where I would like to go, but being that I do not want to disappoint him, i was wondering if anyone knows a few spots. No I am not asking anyone to give up the sweet spots. Just want a more precise location. To be honest, if someone did give me a good spot and I happen to see a nice deer, I would have to pass on it. Why? Well trophy deer are not for me or my son at this point in time and if I shot one it would of course have to be mounted, I really can't afford to do that nor am I really looking for the big one.
I want my son to experience something I never got the chance to do when I was young. My grandfather always went hunting, never took me nor ever taught me how to shoot. Heck nobody ever taught me how to shoot until I joined the Army in 89. Anyways, It would be a great help to kind of narrow down my playing field just a little.
I was thinking of going up to Sherman creek just off of NF 2030, however I am sure that will be crowded and that is not what I want. My other plan is west of Kettle Falls, just not sure where!
I am from the west side and I do not like to road hunt. I like to get out and away from others. I am trying to teach my son the fundamentals of hunting in the woods, taking the time to get to where you want to go and then just be patient. My Girlfriend will be joining me and this will be her very first hunt as well. later on down the road, maybe in a few years my son and I will be switching from Modern Firearm to Archery. For now we will stick to Modern Firearms.
Thank you all for your input, any is much appreciated!
