High hunt ends in bear success
« on: September 21, 2013, 12:02:52 PM »
We got up to camp saturday morning after a two day hike in.  We spotted the buck we wanted on saturday night and were waiting for him sunday morning.  I was glassing the tundra and to my surprise I see two wolves wondering through. :bash:.  We didn't see a deer until tuesday and it was the one we were after and he was running around with another nice buck.  I noticed up in the tundra at the base of the rocks there was a bear feeding on huckleberries.  After glassing and waiting 3 hours for the bucks to bed down they finally did.  We packed up camp and headed that direction.  I wanted my hunting partner to get the bear and then move onto the bucks.  Well that didn't quite happen we made our way through the tundra roller after roller. Nothing!  I poked my head over the last one and the bear was looking right at me at 100 yards and started to take off.  I put the sako a7 tecomate 300wsm on his shoulder and let it fly.  It hit him hard and then the roll began end over end over end for 200 yards He went out of sight and over a 80ft dry waterfall.  Needles to say we had one heck of a pack out.  It was my first bear and had a great hide.  So yes had to take the hide for the rug.  It took us two days to pack this sucker out.  I learn a lesson on this trip, that I will never carry out a bear hide again in the wilderness.  I'm still hurting.  Here are some pics of the bear and some pretty country.
