Which Weatherby?
« on: October 27, 2008, 10:47:20 PM »
Been looking at Weatherby and am wondering what your opinions are between the Mark V Ultralight and the Vanguard Sub-MOA? Will probably be looking at either the .300win or the .300wby.

Never shot either. But i like the look and feel of the ultralight. Although in magnum calibers its really not that light. And i would get it in 270 wby mag. But a 300 is good  :twocents:

Jus curious, but what is the advantage to the weatherby caliber vs the win? Either .270win vs .270wby or .300win vs .300wby? Isn't the ammo for the Wby calibers more expensive?

Ok, let me give some personal experience I own a Weatherby .270 Mark V and a .338 Weatherby Vanguard.  First and foremost the Mark V .270 ammo is like $51.00 a box.  The .338 Federal Barnes Trip X is 63.99 a box.  The price of ammo is just high.  My opinion on the two.

The .270 Mark V shoots flatter and hits hard.  I've shot two deer with it and they have both traveled less than 50 yards.  It is the best shooting gun I've ever put to my shoulder.  Period.

The .338 has some serious firepower and doesn't kick as hard as other .338 rifle makers, Weatherby in general just makes a BETTER GUN.  You won't be dissapointed with either.  I will be hard pressed to buy anything other than a weatherby.

(People ask me all the time, what's the differnce between a Weatherby and a remington or a ruger.  I tell them the same difference as night and day, and IMO that is the truth---Not saying you can't be effective with other guns, but I mean there is a difference between a Mercedes and a Chevy, a Chevy can be nice, but it's not a Mercedes.)

If you are hunting deer, I wouldn't even hesitate, I feel like .270 is a better gun.  But it is a little light for elk (the Weatherby .270 can definetely take down an elk, I just like a little more firepower which is why I own a .338 now.)  The .300 you are talking about it enough gun for Elk, and that's my only comparrison to my .338.

But seriously I love both guns, have fun with them!

Buying Weatherby ammo will be very expensive. If you reload you are in good shape, go for it! As far as caliber goes, .270,.300, .338.....If you hit'em where they live, they will die!!
Know your rifle, know your ammo, put a Leupold on it, and you will LOVE your new Weatherby!

i have a mark v in .340, and a vanguard in .300wby and i also have the mark V ultralight in .280 and with a 2.5x8 vx-III scope its the sweetest piece this side of an allout custom. the weatherby action is second to none. the gun shoots .5 moa all day long at 100yds (after i found the right load) all my weatherbys seem to be VERY picky on load combination, but extremely accurate when you hit just right. the only factory rifle's i'll buy are weatherbys, been that way for a while, but any of my new rifles will most likely be customs, built on a howa (weatherby vanguard) action. i would say go for it 110%, you WILL NOT be disappointed!

I have a Ultra lite 300 Wby and consider it my most reliable firearm.  The recoil is stiff in the ultra lite and the ammo is spendy if you don't reload. Mine is tricked out gotta blueprinted action, krieger barrel and a muzzle break shoots .1in groups with 165 tsx's @ 3350fps.  Pretty much the gun I turn too when Im serious about getting something done.

The gun does it all.

Thanks guys. I'm also torn as to whether I want to get a .270 now and then get a magnum caliber at a later time, or just buy one rifle in the middle (the .300). I'm getting close to the point where I will hopefully be drawing an Eastside elk tag, and while I know the .270 can handle an elk on the wetside of the state (usually closer ranges), I don't know if I would feel comfortable heading east with it. Too many choices...  :dunno:

I have a .300 and a .270 weatherby. Both are awesome. I shoot Weatherby factory loads with Nosler Partitions. That gets expensive. I ended up buying dies and just in the last six months started reloading. Check out the ballistics and you will be amazed. Like a lot of guys are saying, there definitely is a difference between weatherby and winchester. :twocents:

those ultra lights are sweet guns, and feel SOLID! which personaly i cant say for any other factory synthetic light wieght mountain style rifle i have felt in any shop. though others may be nice guns and get the job done they just dont feel like solid rifles.
