A .270 Weatherby load can kill anything in the state.
I was just checking out the ballistics between the .270wby, the .270 win and the .280 Rem.....You may have just made up my mind for that .270wby.

Though I did get made fun of relentlessly in Elk Camp for having some a girly gun, which is why I went out and got a .338 Weatherby Win Mag.  I mean, my reputation was at stake!  LOL

If you can afford it a Mark V it's worth the extra cash.

I own the .300 win mag Vanguard, love it. As far as comparing it to the Mark V, I can't, but I know the Mark V is more expensive and for my buck the Vanguard is all the rifle anyone would need. Durable as heck.

First off let me say that I've never owned a Weatherby.  I've been around a few and shot em on occasion that's about it.  I'm pretty familiar with them in an accedemic sense and can offer a perspective to other makes.

Either gun you mentioned is a well made gun.  You'd likely be happy with either.  Alot comes down to what you really want and your budget.  From a big game hunting perspective both will perform for you.

I'm not sure I would categorize Weatherbys as superior to other maker's guns.  Remington, Sako and Browning all make guns on par w/ Weatherby.  There are some things I really like about the Mark series gun... the swing on the bolt, the adjustable trigger, fit/finish, etc.  Some claim that the lugs on it are better/stronger but the data I've seen doesn't bear that out.  All in all they are a really good guns though... well above average.

As far as particular calibers go, I confess I'm not a Weatherby fan.  Without offending all the Weatherby aficionados I tend to think the performance gain comes at too big a price... and not just dollars.  I just think a guy is better off with the more common cals :twocents:

No offense but your wrong IMO.  The only gun I cannot speak for is a SAKO because I have no shot one.  I have shot Remmington's and Brownings and even my browning bearing hunting partner loves my weatherby's.  It's a simple fact.  Weatherby beats out hands down any other non custom off the shelf guns.  Period.

Other than saying a Weatherby beats out anything else "hands down" why don't you give us some facts to back up your opinion?

What make a Weatherby so superior to everything else? Like I said,I'm not looking for opinion.

I have nothing against weatherby's but if there so great how come no custom smith uses there actions? I shouldnt say "no" but I have never seen a custom rifle built on an weatherby action, lots of mauser's, pre 64 winchester's, and remington's but no westherby's JB

The Weatherby Mark V action is one of the smoothest strongest actions out there with (I believe) still the shortest throw.  As one of the posts before pointed out the Vanguard isn't really a "Weatherby" it's a Howa and as he pointed out there's nothing wrong with that.

When you get down to brass tacks however there isn't anything that truly separates Weatherby in quanative measures (unless you want to focus entirely on the bolt construction) from the other top off the shelf guns.  The Mark V is a very good gun and there may be some features that a guy may prefer over other guns but to claim it is superior to the top end 700s, A/X Bolts, and Sakos is not based on objective measure (hell ya almost gotta throw Savage in the mix to be honest).  When taken on the whole (barrels, triggers, bedding, free floating, stocks, etc) some would argue that the evidence points to other manufacturers making a better gun.  To me it's hair splitting.... they're all damn good.

I do find it odd as, jdb pointed out, that you rarely ever see Weatherby actions on custom guns.  Again, I think that Mark V action is really nice.... but I've only seen 1 custom gun w/ one of their actions.  I know there are certain applications where the large bolt face (Mark) and thus action tolerances play better with the larger diameter cartridges like the cals based on the Rigby cases.  As such some big customs are using Weatherby actions.  I've read some stuff from the Lilja guys talking about this.

As far as Weatherby calibers... that's a whole other discussion.

I believe that part of the issue with custom guns having Weatherby actions is that they are difficult to source Vs a Rem 700 or Win pre 64.

I have two custom rifles built on Weatherby Mark V actions and I had to take both of them off fully functioning rifles.  It might not be cost effective for most people but once the actions are Blueprinted they are solid gold.

Im a Mark V shooter for life. :twocents:

Availability is probably a big factor.

No argument from me with your approach to your rifles....
