newbie condensation question
« on: September 21, 2013, 06:26:36 PM »
I will most likely have my daughters shoot their guns at the end of each day and start with a new load every day but was wondering if we keep guns inside then go out in the cold if thatcauses it and what about when it warms up during the day.thanks for helping.

I don't think you will have a problem with condensation but I would recommend leaving you're gun outside. I run the same load day after day as long as its not pouring rain. I keep my barrel end taped and gun stays in the truck at night never have had a misfire. :twocents:

don't empty the gun unless its been raining   but i do always keep a peace of tape over the end of the barrel  just to keep anything from going down the barrel   and i keep a dry patch on the nipple  when it isn't capped  i haven't had any problems in all the years i have been out  but some folks seem to like your idea of emptying the gun every night  an running a few cleaning patches  down before reloading up  it mainly up to you how you want to store them for the night   but do keep your powder dry  !!!! good luck

I always left my gun in the truck, the only time I had a problem was when ?I had it in a warm house and took it outside in the cold and wet.

If you shoot your animal the first day, you don't have to worry about it....   ;)   :chuckle:

I think you have more worry about condensation going from cold to warm rather than the other way around.  Anyone with glasses have them fog up when they go out in the morning?  Just a thought.  As mentioned, be sure to put electrical tape over the muzzle.  My ex forgot one day and I  >:( had to pull the ball out and squeegee the liquified powder out of the barrel.

Normally 'condensation' will occur a lot more often going the other direction - cold to hot - just ask the people that wear glasses.

You guys would probably go nuts at what I do with my loaded rifles... the one rule I do not violate is the cold to warm or hot...

Keep shooting muzzleloaders - They are a blast!!

Typically, I leave mine in the garage or in the truck.  I load it the night before and then unload it on an animal or the last day of the season, whichever comes first.  Never had any issues with it going boom by leaving loaded for the duration of the season.  Shooting it at the end of every day and then cleaning it is pretty time consuming.

I always left my gun in the truck overnight.  Never took it into a warm room at night.  Only time I had trouble was hunting in the rain.  Should have seen me snapping caps in the motel parking lot to dry the bore for the next day's hunt.  :chuckle:
If it was easy, everybody would be doing it.

When Bernie Madoff did it, it's called a "Ponzi Scheme"
When Government does it, it's called "Social Security"
