Moose rut??
« on: September 22, 2013, 02:12:18 PM »
For all you moose experts out there i have a quick question. Knowing they rut mid sept to mid oct and typically it is spurred by weather. It seems it has ben cooler than usual this sept so does that mean they will start early or does it take a significant cold snap to make that happen? Do you guys think it will last through mid oct? Just sitting here over analyzing my hunt and being a worry wort! 8 more days!!
If you can see it....... you can shoot it.

Rut is triggered by photoperiod.  That's why it happens the same time every year.  Weather just makes it more or less active, but the breeding has to occur roughly the same time every year.

Moose will show rut activity clear through into late November.   You can ease your worries, you aren't going to miss it.

Well we are going into our second week of elk hunting in north east Idaho and the Moose are grunting, tearing up trees and some are with cows. Had a cool close encounter with a bull last week with our three year old daughter! We were hiking up a trip and heard grunting! The wind was good so we eased in for a look and caught him bedded down 20yds in front of us! All you could see was his antlers sticking out around a bush. After some time he stood up and our daughter thought that was cool! Always amazing how big they are! He never bolted just stood there and grunted broadside. Easy shot and pack out it would have been. Did video it but left camera in rig! Had a real cool shot of her looking at the moose with him in the background. Hope that helps your moose anxieties! :chuckle:
