need some help
« on: September 24, 2013, 10:45:12 AM »
I have 20 completely undeveloped acres 6 miles NW of Newport WA in GMU 121. I have a trail cam hung and have seen TONS of sign including rubs, sheds, scat and many active game trails.. I'm gearing up for my fifth year of modern on this place but fear I'm gunna leave empty handed again, I've seen these deer they're massive but disappear when season comes around.. any help would be greatly appreciated.

may even be willing to have someone come out for a hunt

I've had my best luck looking for the deepest, darkest, nastiest stuff in the area once the season starts and poke around there.  My experience has been that the deer aren't relocating out of the area (usually) they are just feeling the pressure and are less apt to be moving as much during daylight.  You've heard the old saying "they didn't get that big by being stupid".  Hope that helps some?

20 acres is a lot of property but not a lot of area.   If you are limited to that 20 acres without access to adjoining property you are likely just going to be doing the right place at the right time thing.

I suppose you could hunt 2 acres and eventually get a buck  :dunno:

Easier to be in the "right place" if you have more place  ;)

I know it's 4 point or better, but why not go in the late hunt Nov. 9-19 when it's hot  :dunno:

Back to the OP.  If it does have lots of rubs...I would hunt it in November.

Give the does a good reason to hang out

We have the same scenario in unit 101. We have 30 quiet acres. Started salt blocks and alfalfa 6 years ago. It seems like it took about 4 years to really consistently see does, fawns and small bucks come in comfortably while we are there in Oct. I guess you can say it took a few generations of conditioning. Unfortunately, we don't see any really big bucks show themselves until Nov. and no modern late hunt for 101ers.

There are ALOT of  rubs & game trail activity. i Have had good luck with the trail cam. was wondering if i should just clear all the ground cover (there is alot!! max of 20 yrds of visibility other then the trails) or if there is anything else i can do to entice more animals to come play

Is there another property owner getting the deer ahead of you?
You could be doing all that work for someone else if the deer is moving through someone else's land before they make it to yours.

Between the nine of us on the road we have about 300 acres, we are all very close and share our land with one another. Im kinda right in the middle nut the closest to the ponds (which are owned by cascade timber)
