Sitting and waiting for an elk to appear - How do you do it?
« on: October 29, 2008, 03:03:04 PM »
Some of the advice I have received is to stay in one spot and let the elk come to me. How many of you can stay in one spot from dawn to dusk?
What do you do to pass those hours? Do you have unbelievable patience?
It has been said that a bull just may stick his head out into the open for a few minutes to get some browse and to wait until that moment.
Is that what you do on opening day?
Gathering is easy. Hunting is a challenge.

Sounds unbearable.  During archery season you hurry to the sound of bugles, putting on the miles.

Never !!

However I have been known to take a couple hours to go 100 yds in the woods !! Just find a place and point your nose into the wind and go SSSSSsssslllllllloooooowwwww !!! If I find a great ambush spot and there are other folks pushing the critters I will wait a couple hours but no more, I don't have the patience for that either !!!

Good luck !!

I guess it would work if you were in the think stuff and you were on an escape route for elk that get pushed by hunters. But on the eastside we mainly go slow and glass and listen carefully for the elk when they are moving.

Opening weekend I still from dawn to dusk. Once the roads are closed I move around a little more. But I always sit at first light 2 hours and the last 2 hours of light in an travel corridor or clearcut. Will also take a nap in the middle of the day. Last year woke up and 1 hr late filled my tag.

I have a spot that I will sit every morning until  I get one. My cousin actually found the spot. A small bench on the backside of a mountain. The mountain is timbered and there are farmers fields on the east and west side. Public land on the North and South. I get there early in  the morning and sit 50 yards up from the saddle on a rock. We have pulled 7 elk 3 bulls and 4 cows from the same saddle in the last 4 years. There are bones everywhere  :chuckle: :chuckle: Just sitting and waiting for the people from the bottom to push them up. but I have to be there everyday if I miss a day it will be the one day that they show up. Done that one before too.  :bash: :bash: :bash:

I always take a little snoozer in the middle of the day.  Me and my dad spend from dawn till dusk in the woods.  When I feel like lunch, i find a real nice quiet spot in the deep dark stuff, eat, and then close my eyes for 10, 20, 50 minutes.  Depends on how much whiskey I had the night before!  When I open my eyes (never actually fall totally asleep as my ears are always on) I run into elk more often than not real close to where I napped.  Sitting all day would never be an option for me however.  If there I'm not into elk, I'll creap along at a slow pace until I get into some.  You've got to go find them though....
