How do you clean a cerakoted gun?
« on: September 25, 2013, 07:49:16 PM »
Recently had Gorge Custom Coatings cerakote my o/u barrels. Came out great but I'm not sure how to clean it? Is standard rem oil fine or is their something special? Any oils/cleaners I should stay away from?

Thanks

You might try going back to the ones that did the work on it. How about some pics?

If coated properly the cerakote finish should take just about anything you can throw at it.  Though you should try to limit the exposure of bore cleaner to an absolute minimum as it can sometime change color slightly.  We had a guy with a 1911 slide that was coated with the stuff swear he could remove it with Sweets since he wanted the stainless finish back.  He soaked the slide for five days and it had no effect at all.  To me it actually looked a deeper black than when he started.

But, I agree with Bmcox86.  I would probably contact Gorge Custom Coatings if you plan to use something super strong on it.  If nothing else to make sure you don't void some sort of warranty.  Though I'm not sure why you would need to use anything more than oil or Hoppe's on a barrel's exterior.  I use Castrol Gun Oil and a soft dry cloth on mine.
He asked, Do you ever give a short simple answer?  I replied, "Nope."

Just curious, what benefit would you get by  coating the slide on a 1911?

The dillweed thought the stainless slide was too shiny for his range commando lifestyle!
