Moscow-Potlatch Area
« on: September 27, 2013, 11:12:58 PM »
Planning a November trip with my family in late November. Is there a lot of NF around here or public land that can be hunted? I typically hunt around the Sandpoint, Twin Lakes area but I've heard there is some good hunting down this way. I have always sat and waited during the rut but everyone I talk to lately says grunting and rattling is the way to go. Moved from SW Washington hunting blacktails so this should be a fun experience. Any advice would be great for the family in this area. Thanks.

Plenty of open hunting land to the East and North of there.  Not much other than private in close to towns in that area, but get a mile up most roads off the highways and you are able to hunt.  Potlatch Timber owns a lot of the land in that area that is open, so does the state.  There are a lot of good bucks taken every year in the Potlatch-Clarkia-Dworshak triangle.  It'd be worth the trip.
Bring a GPS!  It's awkward to have to eat your buddies!

Absolutely correct! I am jealous. Good bucks come out of there alot. Moscow mountain, although sometime a few people, can be a good spot! Rattling is THE way to go, with grunts. Should be able to pull in a decent buck! Make sure and keep us posted!

Thanks everyone...we're not used to this Idaho hunting season as it is so much different then WA. We hunted the SW Washington area in the Coweeman our whole life so hunting the Whitetails in November sounds like a blast! We will keep everyone posted on the results.

I spent 4 years over there at UI and hunted and shed hunted everything within about 2 hours of Moscow.  I'd check out the area east of Deary/Bovill, towards Elk River and south and east of there towards the reservoir.  You might find yourself a spot for elk while your out that way too if you think elk could be a possibility for you down the road. Could luck into a wolf too!

EDIT: I knew a few guys from up north there. Sandpoint and the surrounding areas. They actually said the hunting was better up there, but that could be because they knew the area around home better.  Quite honestly I don't think you can go wrong anywhere in north Idaho, the whitetails are everywhere.  A lot spookier than blacktails though, that's for sure!
