Late season decoys

Ill be hunting the sound for the first time later in the season, december and January. What kinds of puddle ducks will still be around? I assume all the teal will be gone. Will there still be good numbers of widgeon and pintails as well as mallards? Im just curious as to what kinds of decoys i should be bringing.

By late season, there will be more pintails around than anything. You will not need pin dekes for them. There should be plenty of mallards and wigeon around too. I have always seen plenty of teal to boot. I would recommend mallards and maybe some wigeon but probably not necessary, they'll come in to your mallard dekes.

Usually see tons and tons of wigeons and scaup in the bays in january.

In my opinion i use a mixed bag of dekes with a few floater goose decoys because it changes things up for them compared to most folks dekes set up

Thanks for the advice fellas! I guess ill just pack all the dekes i got and see what works. Pretty excited to shoot teal, widgeon and pintails in full plumage! Hardly ever see em past mid october where I come from.

I like a few pintail deeks in the spread because they really show up well at long distances.

Yup, later in the season, less is more.
Find this is often the case with geese in the fields too.  Heck later in the season I will change from a short reed to a flute.  They have heard short reeds all the way down from Canada.  The flute is pretty mellow and is different.
