transporting trophies question
« on: October 04, 2013, 07:08:11 PM »
Out of curiosity what's the legality of hunting grizzly in Alaska and transporting the meat and hide back to Washington?
The best equipment in the world is useless to the idiot who doesn't understand it.

To legally hunt Griz you need a guide in Alaska ( unless you are resident or have a relative within second degree of kinship).    To take the hide/ skull out of Alaska you will need to get it sealed at a F&G office and get an export tag.  To take the hide out of the US, (driving thru Canada) you will need to obtain a CITES permit.

Hope this helps

Very informative. Thank you. So legal to own in Washington as long as it's sealed?

Yup.  You need a guide to hunt Griz/ brown bears, mt goats, and sheep.  Anything else guide not required if you have the tag.
Your bear guide will know the rules also.
After harvesting a bear, you need to take the hide and skinned out skull to F&G.  They will put another tag on the bear and usually extract a tooth.  Usually have to do this within 10 days.
A taxidermist will usually have to see that sealing tag to accept the hide.

Once it's sealed you can take the hide out of Alaska into any state.  The taxidermist will remove the tags, and once it's tanned you no longer need it tagged.

This is all from memory so good idea to review Alaska regs before you hunt.
