I know, for many bears i would take the same shot, but that thing is a beast. It would be a shame if its skull was huge.

So he gave me a backstrap, any tips on how to cook it?

Crock Pot is for the tough stuff!  I would cook it like any other good cut of meat.  With that much fat he's probably been eating berries so it should be fantastic eating.  Unlike most big game you cook to medium rare bear, like pork, needs to be cooked medium well (165*) just to be safe.  It has enough fat it will not get dry at that temperature like most big game will.  Should be sweet, tender and yummy!

Doubt he looked like that in August!  We've taken a good number of them like that in early October.  All were outstanding vittles   That guy was probably barely a 350 boar in August.  Got to love those October boar.

He has definitely been eating well ... that's why I would not waste my energy in August ...especially if your looking for one to mount or eat ....Bear makes some of the best summer Sausage known to man    Funny when you peel off all that hide and fat and there is not much meat
